Dick's Story
Life
Richard D. Karkkainen - Chief Technical Officer
Richard Karkkainen is an environmental/chemical engineer
specializing in environmental investigations, selection of cost effective
remediation technology, development and evaluation of
environmentally related processes and management of projects.
Karkkainen completed both his undergraduate and graduate degrees
in engineering at the University of Michigan. He currently is the
founder of Scenic Bluffs which specializes in the development of
technology to recover metals utilizing hydrometallurgical processes
from waste piles, and ore.
He spent 14 years with URS Corporation, Woodward-Clyde
Consultants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He held various administrative assignments including Project
Manager, Office Manager and Vice President responsible for profit and
loss for work performed by 150 personnel, and corporate chairman of
the Environmental Remediation Technology
Committee.
His participation and involvement has included writing permit
applications and closure plans, managing push probe sampling and
conventional drilling and sampling, performing risk assessments and
plume modeling, and performing studies involving consideration of
natural attenuation monitoring, phytoremediation, soil washing,
excavation and dredging. He also designed or evaluated thermal
desorption, recovery wells, recovery trenches, composting,
landfarming, landfill construction, and stabiliz...Expand for more

implemented projects involving tank removal , off site disposal in
landfills, incinerators, and cement kilns and onsite treatment on a
landfarm. The work was performed for the following facilities or sites:
- A commercial hazardous waste landfill facility in Louisiana
- A commercial hazardous waste incinerator in Louisiana
- A pesticide manufacturing facility in Mississippi
- An oil refinery in Louisiana
- An oil barge cleaning operation in Louisiana
- The Dutchtown Superfund site in Louisiana
- An electrical substation and former power plant in Louisiana
- Waterways contaminated with PCBs in Louisiana, Arkansas,
and
Kentucky
- Waterways contaminated with mercury in Tennessee
- A wood products facility in Louisiana
Karkkainen also spent over 2 years with IT Corporation In Baton
Rouge, Louisiana.
As General Manager he managed profit and loss of projects executed
by 25 personnel at the Baton Rouge office.
Additionally he managed the following projects:

My position was the Corporate Director of Environment and Safety.
