CLASS OF 1964
Chicago, IL

dick's Story

I only spent one year at William Ray as we had moved down from Vancouver Canada for my dad to attend U of C. It was an amazing year for me! The social unrest of the 60's was so intense, and the reasons so varied. If I had not lived through a part of it in Chicago my life would have been very different. I got to know classmates that were really one generation away from 20th century slavery, and were struggling with the anger that I came to (at least partially) understand, I marvelled as I wandered for countless hours in the Museum of Science and Industry and saw the beauty of the University - and tried to understand the stark contrast of the south side. I never did have much of a growth spurt, but it sure hadn't happened in grade eight: and I walked out on the asphalt basketball court with classmates that could dunk with either hand, HUMBLING... dsight. I sat in a class led by a teacher that made me very uncomfortable in some ways but taught me to think as I'd never learned before. Thank you Mr Woodrow Wilson, with all of your eccentricities. I got to know Mark Hayashi, and wish I could reconnect. He was an amazing loyal friend and he gave me wonderful insights into the Asian American world that were life lessons when my home city of Vancouver had a massive Asian influx in the 80s. Thanks Mark. From Chicago we moved to Toronto for a year then back to Vancouver. Over the years I worked as an assistant manager for the third McDonalds in Canada, a professional photographer, a Pastor for 40 years (20 of them also serving as a Chaplain in jails), and am now back pastoring after 10 days of being retired from Correctional Services. Husband of one (43 years and counting), father of 2, grandfather of 6. A blessed man.
