Dina's Story
Life
I met a man from Peru, Juan Carlos, while working in Atlanta and married in 1995. We moved to Pinellas County, Florida in April 1998. We have a beautiful son and 2 adorable dogs and are expecting baby #2 in April '07.
School
I wish I had spent more time developing frienships. I wish I had taken my grades a little more seriously and I wish I had thought about my future a little more carefully instead of choosing my college based on which state had the lowest drinking age. ha/ha But I did have some great times.
College
After HS graduation, I attended NLU in Monroe, LA for 1 year and then moved to Panama City, Florida. I lived in PC for 4 months and then moved back to Monroe and attended NLU for one more sememster before quitting again and enrolling in Louisiana Business College, where I graduated with a diploma in Travel and Tourism. I then moved BACK to Panama City and worked at Mark II Beach Resort for 5 years while attending Gulf Coast Community College, where I received my A.A. in Social Work. I then moved to Atlanta and attended Georgia State for 1 semester, Kennesaw State for one semester and then finally ended up at Agnes Scott Col...Expand for more
lege (not a girls' school without men, but a women's university without boys). I graduated with honors in 1998 with a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology. In Dec. 2003 I was accepted into graduate school at the University of South Florida in Tampa for Rehab and Mental Health, but then I became pregnant and decided to wait until after the baby to see if I would still want to attend. So far I have not wanted to go back to school.
Workplace
I've had approximately 35 bosses since I was 18 years old. I have done many different types of jobs, from door greeter at Wal-Mart to Case Manager for the Department of Children and Families. I currently teach middle school and I teach in a self-contained classroom. I teach Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and Reading to boys, ages 11-14, with behavior and/or mental health problems. Call me crazy!!! It is definitely NOT boring. During the 2005/06 school year, I made a decision to teach no longer and instead stay home with my son beginning in May 2006 once my contract ends. But then at the last minute I decided to teach another year..bad decision. Luckily I became pregnant and I won't be there a full year.
