Dolores's Story

Had a great time in the theatrical group and in the DCT group. But when I got married and had seven children of my own, I spent a lot more time with them until the youngest reached 11 years of age. Since the oldest was already 18, I thought it was a great time to leave Miami, where we had lived for quite some time. I deicded to go to Colorado. There was a converted school bus made into a camper and I figured when I sold the house, I would purchase it. The children on the other hand, had other ideas. They suggested we go to Colorado by bicycle. Being the only adult in the house, I agreed. My boss did not. He claimed if we rode bicycles from Miami to Colorado, We would get killed on the highways. So I re-routed all my plans, and we headed to Europe for a three and a half month odyssey that was a turning poiint in my life. We arrived in Luxemburg June 15,1972., The first camp site was a farmyard. Great. With all sorts of adventures we traveled to Paris, Versailles, From there we headed South in spite of my oldest daughter, and ended up in San Gabriel on the Mediterranean Sea. From there, we traveled to...Expand for more
Frejus, Cannes, Monte Carlo, and then the Italian Border. In Italy a bicycle was solden, a child ended up in the hospital for 9 days and money requested from my boss, although it had arrived, I was not able to access it until I went to the American Consul who sent me to the Amex bank in town. From there we went to Pisa by train, then to Milan, and into Switzerland, also by train. I thought I was being smart. We would skip all the steep mountain roads. In Germany, I found out differently. Leaving Waldkirk, on a cold drizzly day, the children got ahead of me and disappeared in the woods. I followed slower but soon found myself on a switchback that lasted forever, with trees stretching up 40 feet to the road I was on and 40 more over my head. Did the children get down safely? Were they all right? At the bottom I found out. What took you so long, Mom? All six were hale and hardy and itching to ride some more. Kandel, Strassburg, and then some until we reached Luxemburg again. And home. Wow, what a trip. Next time I will travel with an adult. Wonder if there are any now that would not mind a bike ride?
