Don's Story

Life Demons! Greetings and best wishes to all. I went into the Air Force in January of 1983, and have been stationed in Las Vegas, Korea, Japan, Louisiana, Georgia, Utah and North Carolina. I'm currently retiring and moving back to the Hill AFB area near Ogden, Utah. I met my wife, Paula, in Las Vegas. We've been married almost 25 years and have 4 children and two grandchildren. I served in Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM and Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY in Haiti, and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in Kyrgyzstan. Most of my family still lives in Georgia. My wife's family is mostly in Indiana. I still love classic rock music and working on cars. I planned to stay Air Force until they pushed me out the gate. Now that I have 28 years in, that date has come. The body is starting to show some wear and tear, and my BS filter is getting clogged. Still a great job, but the pay doesn't make up for the stress and deployment grinder. Not to mention our leaders using us as a social experiment, so on 1 February 2011, I call it quits. School Missed school almost as soon as I graduated. Didn't realize how hard it was to stay in touch afterwards. Had tremendous crushes on several ladies(you guess who!). Had a blast in JROTC with Phil Atkins and Sonja Barnes. Really enjoyed the time our unit marched in the Christmas parade in Disneyland. My best friend at WRHS was Chuck Keesee, we did everything together. I still remember cruising around in that 1963 Chevy Belair of his. Living in base housing across from the school had advantages, like sneaking home for lunch. Used to sneak off campus with friends to fast food places as well. I had 3 different motorcycles while at WRHS, so it kind of limited my dating ability. Not to mention the women I liked were way out of my league. Hope to see more classmates at the next reunion. ved up in rank and position to supervise shops and then whole vehicle maintenance work centers. Most interesting job ever was the 4 and a half years as a First Sergeant, taking care of the needs of the enlisted in my organizations. Lots of drama and late night phone calls, but I really enjoyed the opportunity. I finished my career as the Fleet Manager for a vehicle shop maintaining a fleet of 600 vehicles, and it's a challenge. I also do lots of volunteer things on base and in the community. Nothing like helping others to perk up your day! Military Started out with technical school at Chanute AFB, Illinois. Went to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas as an auto mechanic for my first assignment. Stayed for 5 and a half years, then went to Korea for 1 year. Back to Las Vegas for 4 more, then on to Yokota AB, Japan (hated it!). Then got sent to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana for 4 and a half years. One more in Korea, then wound up back in Georgia. Spent 3 years at Moody AFB in Valdosta, then moved to Hill AFB in Utah. I was there for 3 years, with a tour in Kyrgyzstan, and back to Korea again at Osan Air Base. I finished up my career at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina. Have served in the first Gulf War, in Haiti, and again in Saudi Arabia, and finally Kyrgyzstan. Wouldn't trade my military career for anything. I have friends all over the planet. I made it to 28 for max retirement, and now looking for new employment. Update: After retiring from the USAF in 2011. I worked for Lowe's for 6 years. Sold my home in Utah and moved back to the South for a few years. Finally wound up in Mississippi, working for the Air Force again, this time as a civilian. Looking for a couple more years then retire for good. Need more time to tour the country and continue to play with my classic car collection. Had a blast at the 40th reunion, and always enjoy catching up with old friend.
