Don's Story
Life
I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. My family moved to California around 1956, where we lived for several years. My father had many issues, causing us to move multiple times. For example, when I was in the seventh grade, we moved five times in one school year. Eventually, after my parents separated, I lived in Buena Park and attended Buena Park High School. I enlisted in the Air Force one month after graduation. I retired from the Air Force in 1989. Besides Vietnam, I was stationed in Europe for eight years and at several other bases in the United States. I have been married for 49 years. My wife and I were foster parents for 22 years, caring for over 50 children and youth. In high school, I was involved in music (Madrigals, Concert Choir, etc.). When I retired from the Air Force, I moved to Oregon to attend college and complete my graduate work at the seminary. I was semi-retired but became bored. I work as a foster care coordinator for 211Info. This is a non-profit connecting people to thousands of social service resources. Life has been good, and I am thankful for all my experiences.
School
I started at Buena Park High School during my sophomore year. I enjoyed my 2 1/2 years at school, but it wasn't easy academically because of all the moving I did while growing up. That was one reason I joined the Air Force. I know most of the teachers I had known my background and helped me get through school. Music was important, and that was where most of my friendships were made. Whenever I am in Southern California, I do take time to drive by the school. I doubt I would want to return to high school, but I have good memories.
College

ry to civilian life. I enjoyed the challenge of the school. I graduated in 1994 with both my bachelor's degree and my master's degree. Multnomah was and still is very important to me.
Workplace
My work history is in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1989. Then I was a student in college and seminary from 1989-1994. I worked at Morrison Center from 1997-1999 and then went on staff at Oak Grove Church from August 1999 to August 2003. I volunteered for about 15 months at Portland Foursquare Church and was on staff for one year. I worked at Albertina Kerr Centers, where I trained/recruited/certified foster parents for high-needs foster children. Susan and I fostered parented for 21 years.
I also worked at Boys& Girls Aid, Holt International. On a very part-time basis for several years, I co-facilitated two groups of men who were court-ordered for domestic violence education. After about 18 months of semi-retirement, I found a great position at 211info on December 31, 2019, and I am still there. I am the foster program coordinator for their statewide program to connect foster parents to resources.
Military
I joined the Air Force in 1969 and served until 1989. I was stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota; Pleiku AB, Vietnam; Vandenburg AFB, California; Ramstein AB, Germany; Mt. Home AFB. Idaho; back to Ramstein AB, Germany; and then to Nellis AFB, Nevada. I earned the following awards: Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal, and the other ribbons/awards you would typically get depending on where you served. I enjoyed the Air Force, and I retired as a master sergeant. As of August 1, 2022, I have been retired from the Air Force for 32 years.
