Don's Story
Life
I attended Central Michigan University after High School along with Dave Hartman and Bob Pfeiffer. During the summers breaks between semesters of I worked on some construction projects in Switzerland, Venezuela, Haiti and Italy with Teen Missions, International. December of 1978 I graduated from CMU. The next week I started working for Cutler-Hammer in Fenton, Michigan.
After six months at Cutler-Hammer I decided to get some more education. I went to Portland, Oregon in 1980 attend graduate school at Multnomah Bible College until 1983. Next I spent about three years in Southern California working for a few companies as a computer programmer. It was too smoggy and crowed, so I moved back to Oregon in 1986.
In 1987 I married Rachel. Bradley was born in 1991 and Blake was born in 1995 making them native Oregonians. The country there was great with Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge and the Pacific Coast. When the boys were toddlers we would take short hikes near Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. We started camping in 2000 and spent several weekends through out the year at the coast. We caught crabs, and harvested clams and mussels. Most of the time it is cloudy, but the months of July through October are usually sunny. We just put a tarp over the tent and wear raincoats when it rains.
I worked at Bidtek as a Programmer Specialist, so that I could support my recreational activities. Actually, my lifestyle is almost the same as when I was a kid back in Michigan with most of the time spent between work, school and church.
One of my coworker at Bidtek was from Novi, Michigan. He told me that Dave Hartman and Bob Smith were coac...Expand for more
hes at the High School. My brother Dave was in the Air Force and when he was a flight instructor at the Academy, he met Major Tony Kern, who was also a flight instructor. Sometime I thought that I would run into Jim Siebert at a Software Quality Conference, PNSQC that I volunteer as a member of the organizing committee since he worked there in Portland, Oregon too.
June 2006 we moved to Michigan to live near my parents who now reside near Jackson. It was a long drive from Oregon to Michigan, but it was great to see Yellowstone National Park and Mt Rushmore plus the country in between. We rented a small farmhouse from my sister Debbie next door to my parents and my brother David and his family. It was great to live next to family after being on the West Coast for 26 years. My two sons had fun playing with their cousins, plus I enjoyed fishing and hunting with my dad. The winter weather was too cold, so in May 2007 we moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia where the job market is better and my wife's brother and family live. Currently I'm working for the Post Office as a Rural Carrier that is quite a change from a sit down office job plus it is a chance to learn the community.
There is a lot of early American and Civil War History in this area. The Rappahannock River is very scenic and flows into the Potomac. The weather is milder and similar to the Oregon Coast. We've only been to Washington, DC once and unfortunately the surrounding suburbs seem to have a perpetual traffic jam when driving into DC. Hopefully with both my son's involvement with Boy Scouts we can get some insights into the local community and outdoor recreational activities.
