Donald's Story

I as born on April 23,1946 in Elma Washington my family lived in McCleary. My dad Lawrence Ackley was a log truck driver and delivered logs to White Star. My mother was a home maker. March of 1949 my dad was drawen for a homestead in Tulelake, California. He started builing our home but on March 28,1950 he was killed when his tractor tipped over and crushed him. Mom then rented the homestead and moved us to Wilson Kansas where she grew up. We lived there from 1952 -1958 then moved back to Tulelake finished grade school in Newell. I then went to Tulelake High School to the middle of my junior year. We then moved to McCleary Washington and finished high school in Elma. I then returned to Tulelake and went to work for the US Forest Service fighting fires and thinning trees and planting trees. I then was drafted into the Army in 1966 Trained as a door gunner at Fort Riley Kansas wher I then shattered my right arch. gave me a MP MOS and was a MP for a year then they foun out that I had no MP schooling so they sent me to the infantry where I drove for officers. I returned to Tulelake and was crew cheif fighting forest fires form helicopters this was only seasonal work I married my wife Bobbie August 2,1969. I worked on ranches and one that I workd on was the ranch that Zane Grey wrote about in the book Forlorn River. Then I went to work in Klamath Falls Oregon for Weyerhaser 1972-1998 I had a bad accident and was retired. I now live in Keno, OR. My two brothers Craig and Larry still live in McCleary and Shelton and their kids. My daughter son-in law and grand kids live in Everett WA. I have many hobbies that keep me busy, Knife building, carving, leatherwork, Photography, Fishing and hunting. I only live 30 miles from Tulelake and love it here just a step from home. I hae many friends in Elma, Wilson and Tulelake, you can say that I was sort of lucky to have lived in many places.
