Donald's Story
Life
Since I graduated from high school I have lived in the South Pacific, and New Mexico, and have been a business owner and a cop. I have built, and raced, cars and boats, and also built the best passenger jet in the world. I worked for Boeing a total of 35 years before I retired in August 2009, Still enjoy my music and my cars. My wife of 22 years passed away in March 2009 after a seven year battle with cancer and I struggled with that loss for some time. I am still into genealogy, travel and woodworking. In 2008 I completed my degree in Business Management (finally). I have always regretted not finishing out my degree and now I have.
I lived in Australia for two years and moved back to the states in 2012, This cold and wet Northwest weather has not been kind to these old bones and finally bought a home in Mesa, Arizona where I now live with our school mate, Sharon Taylor. We hooked up some time after the passing of her late husband and are now enjoyed the warmth of Arizona together for five years. Unfortunately Sharon passed away from complications with COVID in 2021 so I now live alone in my way too large home in Mesa. For my next trick I am seriously considering selling my home in Arizona and moving to Mexico for the next 20 years or so. Figure I might as well chase some senoritas around instead of sitting here in Arizona alone.
School
Music was my passion in high school. I was in the concert band, marching band, revue orchestra, and played in the original Jazz band started by Corky Ryan in 1961 and 1962. Fun times were cruising at Dick's after the games and passing the "hot chocolate" thermos around at the football games. My favorite teacher was, of course, Ronald Taylor the band and orchest...Expand for more
ra director. Would I do it over again if I could? Definitely, the only thing I would do different is pay more attention to my studies. I struggled with everything except my music classes and quickly learned the error of my ways once I began taking college classes. It was all good and I would not trade any of it. Even playing in the Bel-Aires dance band on weekends. We did not make a fortune or get rich or famous but we sure had a good time. I often wonder whatever happened to all of the guys in the band, or if any of those promo pictures are still floating around anyplace. If anyone knows I would sure like to get some copies.
Workplace
I certainly did not lack for work experience after leaving high school. Without the funds to go on to college I spent two years in the military (Navy). One of those two years was spent on Midway Island. Beautiful beaches and wonderful weather, but not much of a social life for a young sailor since there were no single females 18 years of age or older allowed. After the service I managed a gas station until a job opened up at Boeing. (Remember when they had full-service gas stations?) After a year and a half at Boeing I moved to New Mexico and became a police officer in Los Alamos. While there I got back into the gas station business and ended up owning, and operating, five businesses in Los Alamos. After my divorce I came back to Washington, worked for Glas Ply for a few years, and went back to Boeing in 1977. After a total of 35 years at Boeing, 25 years as a manager, I retired from Boeing in August of 2009. My main job now is trying to keep busy and have taken up boat building again. My garage has become my woodworking shop and I build anything that strikes my fancy.
