Donald's Story

Life After graduating Jersey City State in 1970 Uncle Sam (ARMY)wanted me (shows you its bad taste!). I served my basic training in Fort Dix, NJ and moved on to Ft. Jackson, SC to advanced training. I was assigned to the MPs at Ft. Jackson upon graduation where I had the great job of handing out post bumper sticker registrations (like today's parking permits). That lasted about 6 month when I got shipped off to Europe - on the transfer list, I was the 1st name not being sent to the Nam! I was stationed in Cakmakli, Turkey (that's pronounced Chock-mock-lee) in the Intelligence and Operations Unit. Served there until the end of my Army career. Retruning stateside, after a break, got a job with the State of NJ Treasury - lasted 5 yrs, moved to Marin County, CA - just north of Frisco - and a job with Fireman's Fund Insurande - lasted 18 mos - hated CA, moved back to Jersey, got old job back and am now retire as of Jan 1, 2006 While back here in Trenton, became active in local affairs - served on several municipal commissions including the Historical Preservation Committee - some 2 yrs and became founder and now past president of the Trenton Gay & Lesbian Civic Assn. (The later being one of the major forces behind the NJ Domestic Partnership law passed in 2004 and Civil Unions in 2007). Also became past pres of the North American Vexillological Assn (study of flags and their history) and am currently author of "Native American Flags" the 1st authoriative book on tribal flags and their meanings (visit Amazon.com.). The publisher, University of Oklahoma Press, just okay-ed an updated version for 2010. Until retiring in 2006, I serve as the NJ Data Architect, designing databases, data warehouses, data marts and operational datastores for the various components of NJ state government. My areas of expertiz...Expand for more
e were Oraqcle and ADABAS - two different data base management systems. I used to live 2 blocks from my office (eat your commuter hearts out) and shared my home (built 1877)with the most magnificent "Fred" - a 15 yr old mutt (Shepard - Retriever mix) and the lovely "Kelso" an 11 yr old rescued greyhound. ey have both passed on. Fred died while in Trenton when he was 17.75 years and Kelso died inmy retired home of Arizona in 2008 at 14.5 years - bad heart. When first written, Fred just returned from an extended stay at the University of Pennsylvaqnia Vet Hospital after his heart rate dropped to 28 beats per minute from a norm of 80. He was scheduled for a permanent pacemaker - yes, dog's can get them too; but after removing a temporary one for additional tests, his heart rate was bak to normal! At nearly 15 (October,2004) he is 3 years beyond his life expectancy as it is and, once again, going strong! Yhe vets say he is a miracle dog, but I have known that for the more than 10 years since I took that poor, rain soaked stray mutt in from the misery of an October night! Workplace 1974-79 programmer State of NJ 1979-80 woked at Fireman's Fund INsurance in San Rafael, Ca as lead analyst on their NO-Fault system for Louisiana. 1980-2006 (I know my retirement plans)Computers State of NJ = currently the State's Senior and only Data Architect, overseeing database designs for all systems for all departments - it allows me to justify drinking to excess!!! Actually, it makes me appreciate my dogs more at the end of the day - they give me low stress! Now - as of July 2006, I have retired (as of Jan 1, 2006) and moved to Bisbee, Arizona one of the greatest moves of my life. Tranquility, natural beauty, lower cost of living and low stress are just some of the benefits. I am happy for the first time in my life.
