Donald's Story
I expect my "story" is typical of many from my age group. While attending Baxter Elementary School I lived at 460 Randolph Street, on the corner of Randolph and NW 5th Street in Richmond. I attended Dennis Jr. High, Hibbard Jr High and Richmond High School until I left to go to sea in the Merchant Marine in 1944. I was a crew member of the SS Josiah Royce, a Liberty Ship, in a convoy supplying the Army during the invasion of Leyte in the Phillipines.
After reaching age 17 and returning home I enlisted in the Navy where I attended Boot Camp and Gunners Mate school at Great Lakes Naval Base and subsequently attended Submarine School at New London Connecticut and was assigned to the USS Sea Robin, SS407. We had the experience of being the first submarine to transit Cape Horn.
After about 2 years I attended Hospital Corps school at Great Lakes and labora...Expand for more
toty school at Bethesda Naval Medical Center and served as a corpsman with the First Marine Division during the invasion at Inchon, South Korea, in September 1950 and for 10 months following. I also served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Cabot, CVL 28 and USNS Eldon H. Johnson, a transport ship serving the Caribbean and Mediterranean, and another tour with the Marine Division on Okinawa for 13 months, 18 months at Argentia Newfoundland and three years in Naval Hospital. Yokosuka, Japan.
That pretty well describes any interesting parts of my life. I later worked at the Centers For Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia and retired in 1985. I currently live in Conyers, Georgia with my wife Martha and our recently adopted Boxer Dog, Callie. Our son, Brian is a graduate of the University of Georgis in Athens and has a career in insurance. I am 86 years old..
