Donna's Story

My first job was at GEMS, where I got paid 1.80HR. to STOCK SHELVES.. What I remember most about it is LONG 12 HOUR SHIFTS!. If I had one do-over I would have left home immediately after school and joined the airforce and become a nurse like I planned. The weirdest job I ever had was working two nights at ALEX'S DRIVE INN-remember? It wasn't really weird as much as it was lame for me because I went in there to serve customers at their cars on roller skates...and I didn't know that until the night I started. I had never been on roller skates in my life but I needed the job! The first night I worked I tripped over the raised bump on the curb fronting the car I was serving saimin to and saimin went all over the car and me. DID I SAY I WAS DESPERATE FOR A JOB? Well I went back a second night and this time I skated up to the car in one piece but as soon as I reached the window the driver opened his door and the two double fudge cones I was holding went into my face and hair-then I fell and I had ice cream in my shoes as well! But I didn't go home because they were shorthanded so I worked the next 6 hours with sticky ice cream in places I won't speak about! My crush teacher was Mr. Bintliff. Remember him? He was gorgeous. First he was a substitute teacher and then he came on board full-time. I remember he played a guitar. I remembe...Expand for more
r he was cute but I don"t remember what class he taught. Life doesn"t turn out the way you expect. I was surprised after 11 years of marriage to be divorced with 3 little babies to raise alone. I wasn"t naive, just shocked! I sure didn"t plan on raising a family by myself. Well they're grown and I have 8 grandchildren-7 girls and 1 boy. Sometimes I think that if I could have done it all over I would have remained a "moving target" so that some of this life could just pass me by...know what I mean? Well I got married in 1969 to a kailua boy and we had 3 children . In 1976 we moved to Maui and I've been here for 32 years. Contrary to what Mr. Gump has to say about life,it's not like a box of chocolates, but God is good all the time. My best friend in high school was Charlene Rego, and the love of my life was John Phillips-1964 grad. I didn"t hang out with the "in" people but I knew quite a few notorious ones. That brings to mind Hollis Conception and Shari Floyd, all of the 64' football players and Mr. Waters Martin! I went to my 10th reunion at the Alamoana Hotel and I never attended any others. My life got complicated and invovlved with raising my children. I missed out on the fun of High school years because my parents were "old school" and they believed that behind every bush there was someone waiting to get me pregnant!
