Donna's Story
Life
I lived in Cincinnati and attended Frost Elementary, North Jr. High, and Mt. Healthy High. The summer after freshman year, my dad was transferred to Memphis, Tennessee - he was a truck driver for Consolidated Freightways at the time. Mom and Dad bought a house in Bartlett and their house was the first sale for their real estate agent, Rachel Durham. For years after I left Memphis, I could call the broker Rachel had worked for in 1974 and identify myself by saying I was the daughter of Rachel's truck driver.
Went to Bartlett High then skipped my junior year to be a senior in fall 1975. Rachel Durham took her daughter Lisa Houseal and me to an open house at Christian Brothers College in fall 1975 and there I discovered that the director of admissions was the older brother of a girl I had known in Cincinnati. Graduated from Bartlett High in May 76, started at CBC in August, and within a couple of weeks had run into Phil Beard (East High class of '76). His best friend (Monte Emerson, CBHS '76) had dated one of my best friends from Bartlett (Pam Shepard, '75), and they had actually introduced us once. Phil and I were both dating other people but we became good friends right from the start. We started dating in April '77 and married in May '79.
We immediately moved to Madison Heights, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit and were there a few months before moving to Indianapolis, IN. Way too hot and humid in the summer, way too cold in the winter. A summer 1983 vacation to visit my parents in South Carolina plus a side trip to St. Simons Island, GA, prompted me to beg, plead, implore, insist, demand (take your pick) that we move back to the South. And January 1984, we...Expand for more
moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. We've loved being here since the first day we came down to look the area over.
We have one daughter, Kimberley, who is out of college, married, and now a mother herself - Kim and her husband Tom had a son in October 2006! Grandma is very much enjoying this little boy. (Grandma and Grandpa already have a pair of tiny hockey skates just waiting . . . .)
The paychecks come in from bookkeeping jobs and go out the door to support my addictions to reading and buying cute things for my grandson. For a few years I was involved in competitive country western dancing (I *love* to waltz) and hope to get back to it in a year or two. I have never worked so hard in my life as when I was taking 3 to 6 hours of dance lessons each week nor have I ever loved any hobby quite so much.
Phil's mom and step-dad are still in Memphis. My parents are in South Carolina; Mom's had memory problems for a while and in Nov. 2008 we got the diagnosis of Alzheimer's. The diagnosis wasn't a surprise but hearing the words the first time really rips your heart out. My brother Tom (Bartlett, '78) lives near Nashville, TN, with his wife and 17-year-old son. Neil, the baby of the family who was born when I was in 5th grade at Frost, is near Columbia, South Carolina with his wife. Both of my brothers are about 6'3" and I'm the same 5'3" that I was in 8th grade. I don't know what Mom fed them that she didn't feed me.
Still haven't graduated from college, although I might actually have my accounting degree finished by our 40th class reunion. In the meantime, however, I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up ......
