Donna's Story

I went to Molholm Elemenary and Belmont Jr. High. We lived on 10th and Kendall Street. When I graduated, I went to Colorado State and majored in education with a degree in physical education and health. I decided that p.e. wasn't the right fit and continued with my master's degree in education specializing in remedial reading. After completing 2 college degrees in 5 years, I was burnt out on education and took 2 years off. I was a waitress and then assistant manager at a restaurant in Ft. Collins called Chesterfield, Bottomsley and Potts. I really enjoyed that but figured I should at least give teaching a try after all the work I had done to get my diplomas. I was hired over the phone by the Clark County School District to teach tall flags who performed with the marching band and remedial reading labs at Clark High School. I had never even seen Las Vegas but I packed my car and a trailer and I have been here ever since... I taught at Clark High for 1 year, where I met my first husband who was a coach and special education teacher. I moved to Brinley Jr. High when they discontinued the reading program at high school. We were married for 6 years. We parted on good terms and I still hear from him once and a while. I taught 12 years at Brinley. The last 6 years as Department chairman. I then moved to VonTobel Middle School in 1992 to take over a federal reading program. I was department chairman and was out of the classroom for 3 years as a reading strategist. I moved my parents from Colorado to live witih me in August of 2001. My ...Expand for more
dad had Alzheimer's and my mom could no longer look after him on her own. I was still teaching and it was very stressful. My dad passed away. And the school district had an early retirement offer if you had at least 250 sick days accumulated. I bought in 3 years and retired at 51 with 30 years. I took 1 year off, did some projects around my home and looked after my mom. I started to get completely crazy from boredom so I hired a lovely lady to look after my mom during the day and I took over running medical records for a small radiology office part-time. I had the opportunity to work closely with a fabuluous radiologist. My mom reached a point where she needed much more care so I made the very difficult decision to put her in a great care center. But I did have the chance to see her everyday and look after her. The corporation closed the radiology center. S, I began volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, a cause that is dear to my heart. I work in the ReStore which is their store that is like a little Home Depot and the money raised there pays the overhead expenses for the office, construction supervisors, mortgage specialist, volunteer coordinator, etc. My mom passed quietly in her sleep , now suddenly I had a lot of time on my hands...so I spent more hours at Habitat and began doing projects in my home...the store hours were extended so in April they hired me to work 3 days a week, which was perfect and I have 4 days off to do other things...but I am back to volunteering. Hoping to stay happy & healthy and to find more ways to give back.
