I started right after graduation by working for a while for a couple of Veterinarians. I moved on to clerical work for 6 months and wound up at the Post Office Airport Mail Facility. That was a strange place, and I discovered that I like working swing shift, but hate graveyard. I left there in early 1970 and spent that year traveling and working temp positions, including vacation substitute driving catering trucks. I was also swimming a lot at Larsen Pool, which led to a job at the new Orange Park Pool in South San Francisco and starting a swi...Expand for more
m school at Sierra Ski & Dive up on Juniperro Serra in Daly City. That got me started in recreation at Skyline College, eventually leading to a job at Friendly Acres Ranch in Half Moon Bay. I was the sometimes assistant manager, wrangler, riding instructor, cashier, and stall cleaner. That lasted, off & on for 11 years. While at Skyline, I worked part time at Sears, waitressing, and even had a short stint as a car hop at the old A&W in Daly City. I did not like waitressing at all. After college, I worked for a couple of printers, and then wound up back doing clerical work. I was also a teller for a while when the loan department I was in ran out of funds - didn't like that either. In the mid 80's, I quit fulltime work to take care of my mother after my father died. A friend wanted to take a month off for an extended vacation, so I took over the front in a dentist's office. I sold panda merchandise from a pushcart at the zoo while the pandas from China were there. It was fun, but sometimes very cold and wet. Petting the pandas was an experience most people never get. Their fur is very coarse textured, not at all soft the way is looks. I also worked in the gift shops at Marine World Africa USA in Belmont. Finally, it was back to full time clerical work at a nursery while still volunteering in the raptor program at the zoo. That brought me up to Shasta County eagle watching, and resulted in my move. I started doing parttime animal care and other tasks at Carter House Natural Science Museum, before finding full time clerical work in the Shasta County Assessor's Office. I stayed on there as their raptor specialist, partially paid and part volunteer, including housing their large raptors at home. I also helped out sometimes at the nursery some friends had, doing planting & watering. I left the County in April 2007 for health issues brought on by stress - very ugly issues and office politics. After moving to Utah, I was semi retired for a year and a half, working a few part-time and temp jobs before starting as a New Accounts Specialist at Transportation Alliance bank, owned by Flying J (yes, I actually worked for a company that is owned by an oil company)until I was laid off as part of cuts resulting from Flying J's bankruptcy. Military I never joined, but my son was in the Army, stationed at Ft. Meyer, Virginia and met his wife there. He was in medical records for 5 years and whe was a psyc tech for 6. My dad and brother were both in the Army and have marker stones at the National Cemetery in the Presidio. Pito and Marcus are in the Army Reserves here in Utah and Julianna was in the National Guard in Puerto Rico and is considering going active duty regular Army. Pito went active duty and in 2011 is stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. Marcus' unit was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. He was severly injured in an ied explosion in July, 2011. Another soldier was killed and a third injured. He is currently recovering at Brook Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. I am on Facebook under DonneMairi MacKillop
