Doran's Story
'71 to 91' and '94 to 2008'
Worked in Stewart BC at the Granduc copper mine (in the middle of a mountain for 2 yrs (underground planner and ventilation technician. Wife complained constantly and left for Consolidated Canadian Farady nickel mine east of Ont. Man. border. Worked as maintenance and operations shift foreman. Wife complained constantly so left after 8 months and went to College in Thunder Bay for 1 yr. as heavy equipment mechanic (diesel). Went to work at Case Equipment in Thunder Bay for 1 yr. Wife complained constantly. Had a daughter 1 1/2 yrs after marriage and a son 3 1/2 yrs after marriage. Wife complained about that too. She finally stopped most of her complaining after we moved from Thunder Bay back to her Home area. Went to work at Sherman Mine (open pit iron ore) in Temagami Ont. I refused to live in New Liskeard or Haileybury and instead bought a home in Cobalt - the smallest town and friendliest town of the Tri-Towns. She complained about that too. We were burnt out in the summer of 77 when 138 families were displaced in the Cobalt fire. I worked at the mine as a millwright, foreman and maintenance planner until the mine shut down April 1st 1990. That was not an April fool's joke. The wife kicked me out the same day the mine shut down. Thought the complaining would stop but she's still at it. When the ex-wife kicked me out I was devastated. I had lost my family, my house (which was paid off) my job, and just 6 weeks before my best friend - my Dad - who died on Valentine's Day. At that time my self esteem was pretty low and I spent a lot of time crying and wondering why. Worked a few jobs - driving truck, heavy equipment mechanic but they were all 89 day wonders - laid off but come back in a week and be re-hired so they didn't have to pay benefits. About 6 months after ...Expand for more
I was thrown out of my house I realized that my ex-wife had given me the greatest gift of all - I could live my own life and not the life she wanted me to live - and it has been absolutely fantastic ever since. I went back to college and took 3yr course in civil engineering. Graduated Dean's scholar - made Dean's list every term.
I met a beautiful woman who enjoyed having someone who didn't drink and who could be her best friend. We met the summer after my second year of college and started living together in the fall of 1994 and are still together and still best friends.
I started up a motor cycle / snow machine repair shop in Coniston (just east of Sudbury) and ran it from 1994 until 1998. I was also working full time 1995 to 1997 at the Shebandowan Mine in Thunder Bay as maintenance planner/foreman and left there to work at the Cambior Gold Mine in Guyana South America 1997 - 2000 (in the middle of the rain forest) as a maintenance planner - US $, 30 days in - 26 days out. Was part of a restructuring lay-off in 2000 and started work a month later at the Golden Giant Mine at the Manitouadge turn off as a maintenance planner and foreman until the mine shut down in 2005.
I am now on Manitoulin Island at my house working on the wife's honey-do list while the wife is still at our other house in Sudbury teaching. I should mention that when my ex kicked me out I thought I'd never own a home again but my new wife (the love of my life) and I have paid off the house on the Island and will have the one in Sudbury paid off shortly. I would also like to mention that my wife and I survived our long distant relationship from the time I finished College in 94 and went to Thunder Bay then to South America until I finally moved back from my last job in Marathon. But best friends are friends forever.
