Dottie's Story

I was born 2 months after D-Day, so that'll give you some idea of my age, "older than dirt", so they say. I grew up in a Victorian-style home in Ipswich, MA with my mother and grandparents who took care of me while mother worked in the business world. I graduated in 1962 from Ipswich High School. Lilita, Morna, Judy, Joyce, etal...are you out there? After college, in 1968, at Wesleyan in KY [where are you: Debbie D.(I named my daughter after you), Gail("Birdie"), Diana P., David T, Jerr C., Sandy O., Linda P. (you were my bridesmaid)], I stayed in KY and taught fifth grade for a year. I returned home to Ipswich. I taught elementary school for several years which was so rewarding. My husband and I have 2 children: my daughter, Debbie, born in 1969, and our son, Nathan, born in 1979 when we lived in Denver, CO where my husband worked for the Denver Post as a professional linotype operator. We returned to Ipswich when the career he loved became computerized. In 1988, we moved to Danvers, MA. In 1991, my best friend in the wor...Expand for more
ld passed away from cancer - my mother. I still miss her terribly and talk about her to my grandson. For 21 years, until retirement in 2002, I was a staff educator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. During those years, my interest in my family genealogy led me to an avocation: MA and NH Commissioner for the Elliot Clan - my maternal grandmother's Scottish family. Among other interests, I enjoy going to musicals - especially ones by Andrew Lloyd Webber - also finding more information about my heritage. A couple of my biggest surprises were discovering that one of my ancestors was Rev. William Brewster who came over on the Mayflower; also that my grandfather's grandfather, who came from Germany, co-founded Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. My daughter (also a teacher) and her hubby made me a very proud "nana" in 2006 when their adorable son was born. One of my fondest memories has been of my trips to Nova Scotia and meeting and visiting the rest of my family. My life has its ups and downs, like everyone's, but it works for me.
