Doug's Story

Last updated November 24, 2008. I have been married since 1990 with two kids, son 1996 & daughter 2001. Been living in Ohio since 1990, Lowellville 1990-1993, Struthers 1993-1998 and now Lake Milton/Diamond 1998-current. I have been in I/T (Information Technology) since 1985 and currently work at company near Cleveland. We are busy with my son sports since he plays baseball, football, basketball & is in boy scouts. 2008 my daughter started cheerleading for the JV pee-wee football team and my wife is the coach. I do not know how she does it, I could not handle being around 20+ 2nd-4th grader girls 4-5 days a week for 3 months, LOL! My son has a great personality, the class clown, LOL! He used to talk your ear off to anyone, like my mom, LOL! But since he is almost a teenager and like most teenagers, don't yak as much to his parents as he once did, LOL! My daughter has now taken over as the gabbiest person in the family, LOL! My parents are both pasted away. My dad died when I was 23 and mom more recently in 2006. I miss them both! As you can see in my recent picture of myself, I enjoy NASCAR. I started to watch it in 2001 when Dale Earnhardt Sr died in the Daytona 500 race. I like a lot of drivers, especially those who are around my age. I had a 35th anniversary 1999 Ford Mustang which got totaled in 2005 so I found a new 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo Dale Earnhardt Jr addition and someone from work found this picture and put my face on it, LOL! I have been to a few races, Michigan 2003 & Pocono 2005 & 2006 and Daytona summer race in 2008. Eventually I would like to go to Bristol, Charlotte, Chicago, Darlington, Martinsville & Richmond and big daddy the Daytona 500 in February. I have great friends. In early 2003, we started with 4 core couples (Barlett, Donaldson, Mills & Truby) to go out once a month playing games, cards, hot tubing, swimming, dinner & drinks and it became known as our "Game Night". We now have around 5-7 couples which have been introduced into the group and we all try to do something monthly. In 2004 we started having an annual outing of camping for the weekend on my property and we started calling Doug Stock or Doug Feast. We have a great time cooking & eating chicken, pork butt or lamb from the spit, go-carting, swimming, volleyball, horse shoes, corn hole and enjoy our favorite beverages during those hot days, lol! Plus I added a karaoke machine in 2007 to sing the night away, lol! The first year in 2004 we had two Doug Stocks. The first outing was over Memorial weekend and we only spent one night. We had a blast and wanted to do it again for two nights so we had another outing in August. Since then we normally have it during the middle of the summer in July. But this year we are attempted Doug "Fall" Stock in October and had a nice time during the day but at night was another story. It got very chilly Saturday night into Sunday morning. But we survived and all are interested in doing it again next year. I enjoy playing cards, Texas Hold'em poker and Euchre. A great friend of my Chris "Trube" Truby started a Euchre league in 2000. So Trube & I and 6 other good friends met every Wednesday night from October to early April. The first few years we started at Georgia's City Lights bar, then two years at Buzzy's bar in Hickory bowling lanes until they closed, then went to Harry's bar in Sharpsville. 2006-2007 we played Texas Hold'em at our homes. 2007-2008 back to playing euchre again at Harry's again. I am not playing for 2008-2009 season since the drive from Cleveland to PA has taken a toll on me. Especially with these gas prices! I won the league one year during the 2003-2004 season. About once a month I do sub for someone in the league on a occasion and still try to play poker tournaments once a month too. Nothing too serious as we like to play many tournament rounds in one night. Some day I would like to play in a satellite to be in a WPT World Poker Tour or the World Series of poker tournament. When I was dating my wife, I went to church with her by attending Sunday evening service. At first it was just a chance for me to be her for another evening. But when we got married, Pastor Don Ertel who was my wife preacher when she was a teenager and who married us, was preaching at a church near where we lived in Ohio. We started going on occasion until we eventually became very active in the church. Teaching Sunday school classes, involved with the youth group, drove the church's van ministry and held various positions in church. Lead bible studies at the church & our home. I took business meetings minutes & was the treasurer for a few years. I eventually became a deacon & then licensed to preach. I filled in for our pastor when on vacation. I also traveled to other churches who were pastorless to preach their Sunday service. But over the 6-8 years being involved with the church, there have always been bickering and tension among members of the church. Some argued about the preachers or with new members trying the make a difference by tying different things & ministries. Or get mad over what color to pant the Sunday school rooms or nursery. Being a young Christian, I could not believe how much arguing occurs in the church over petty things. It got to a point we had to leave this church. We tried other churches and enjoyed their servi...Expand for more
ces. Within a few months we moved to our current home and didn't look for another church as I didn't want to go through the same heartaches. Most recently my wife & kids have been visiting a church nearby. The kids have been attending their children program for the past year. Maybe someday I will go back to church and be active like I once did. In high school I had a lot acquaintances, mostly from being in the marching band. I played the drums but was not that great, LOL! Memorizing music was not my cup of tea but I could make up something that sounded good, LOL! Since I have always been one of the biggest & tallest kids, 6'1" as freshman, I was capable of carrying the bigger drums like the bass and triples. During my freshman year, the seniors took a liking to me one day. We had this "Rowdy Cheer", a senior starts it and then the rest of the band member followed. Of course I sort of screwed it up and was yelled at by a sophomore that I was not doing it right. But the seniors loved it and had me started the cheer on occasion, LOL! Then my sophomore year I grew to be 6'3". So our band director Mr. Bill Moffit start calling me "Bigfoot" and has stuck with me for most of my life. Most kids & parents may not remember my real name but they all remember my nickname, LOL! The nickname truly fits since I grew two inches ever year in high-school and another inch in college. I am now 6'8" tall but not harry like the real Bigfoot, LOL! If I knew I was going to be this tall, I may have tried to play more sports like basketball, football & wrestling. During my junior year our football coach made a comment in the news paper that our band had bigger kids than the football team. I wonder who he was talking about, LOL! I did try to play basketball & wrestling back in 5th grade and in 7th grade played on the junior high football & little league baseball. But being the only child, my parents did not push me in sports and I had no sibling to compete against. I mostly enjoyed playing the drums for fun and had great memories being in the marching band & boy scouts, which I earning the highest rank of Eagle. My only serious high school girlfriend I met while in marching band. We kind of liked each other when she was a freshman & I was a junior. But it did not materialize until the following year when she was "kind of" allowed to date during her sophomore year, LOL! We went steady like most high-school couples for 6 moths and broke up like most high-school couples too, LOL!!! Not sure why, other than I guess she had two more years of high-school left and I did not, LOL! It would of been nice to have remained as friends but when you are 17 it is hard to be friends with someone when your heart wants more out of the relationship. I guess that is why we call it puppy love, LOL! I had a few friends from our graduating class in marching band & boy scouts but after graduation we did not keep in contact. The only people from our class I have any contact with is Gary Antus & Tom Zorzi. About 5 years ago I met them both through a mutual friend "Trube" who works with them. I see Gary 3-4 times a year & Tom 1-2 times a year. And Regina Cave used to live near me for a few years back in 7th-9th grade. But my two closest buddies was from the neighborhood (Kevin & Kurt Donaldson), they graduated in 1987 & 1985. I meet them when I was in 6th grade and they became my brothers. After I graduated, Kurt & I didn't keep in touch but Kevin is still my best friend. He was my best man in my wedding and still part of my life. We go out and is part of the 5-7 couples we hang out with. I have been to our 5th, 10, & 15 reunion. I missed the 20th since it was the same weekend in August as the NASCAR Michigan race. The tickets were already bought and it was my first NASCAR race, LOL! I hope to see some of you at our 25th high school reunion in 2008 but my wife 20th reunion is on the same night too and have not decided yet which one we are attending. What would be nice if Hickory had a huge reunion for all graduation classes to attend. I know some schools near me have done this and would be great to see people I know from 1980-1987. I pretty much have turned this site into my home page. Since where I live, we do not have DSL or cable access for the internet. Dial up SUCKS to do download any pictures. At work a lot of sites are blocked except for this one. So during my lunch time I have been working on updating my profile. So do not be afraid to send a message via email or the bulletin board through classmates or reach me at sixfoot8inchtall at peoplepc dot c o m. I typed this way because they will block your story if there is an email listed, LOL! So reach out to say "Hey, what's up", as I do not bite... that often, LOL! Wow, I still have 9200 characters remaining to add to my story. I guess this is chapter 1 of my autobiography and will think of something later for chapter 2, LOL! If you do remember me from school, I was kind of quiet & shy. I still can be at times but once you get to know me, I can ramble on at times. I can be like my mom who chatted your ear off or be like my dad, one of the quietest person I knew, LOL! Take a look at my TimeLine section too. I have more comments and pictures in each of them. I will be adding more picture from my childhood days from school and the neighborhood.
