Doug's Story
After graduating from NHS in 1965, I went to Utah State and nearly aced my first two quarters..realized I was smarter than the other students and decided to head out on a Honda 160 across the desert through Nevada and into California. My plan was to make a killing in industry in Carmel-by-the-Sea before my classmates even graduated from Utah State. My bike broke down outside of Sacramento and I hitch-hiked the rest of the way. Shortly after arriving, I found out that the only industry in Carmel was tourism... I started to realize that my dreams were not well planned.
After 4 months working in a liquor store as a delivery boy, I packed up my sleeping bag and hitch-hiked cross country as far as the Twin Cities, where I noticed that my remaining funds were just enough to pay for a bus ride the rest of the way back to Natick.

military draft because of a high school cross-country leg injury, I had to figure out what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I took a job at Polaroid in Waltham as a technician trainee and grew up through the ranks and matured to the extent that I needed an education to go further. I took some evening courses at Boston University nights and then put a proposal through Polaroid management to start a pilot co-op educational program with Northeastern University. Along the way I got married a lady from Wellesley and found a place to live in Waltham. We started our family with the birth of our first daughter, Allison in 1972. I graduated from Northeastern in 1973. We moved to Newton Lower Falls and had our second daughter, Holly was born in 1974. I continued to grow up the professional ladder at Polaroid to the ranks of Senior Research Scientist.
