Doug's Story
My wife, Suzanne, and I live in Boerne Tx., a small hill country town just west of San Antonio and LOVE it! Cool breezes, big oaks and a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course.
I still commute in to San Antonio for work most days, but I find it to be a real luxury to be able to work from my office at home when I like. I especially like to work at my home office in the mornings and make the commute safely after the rush hour is over.
I founded and am CEO of a fast growing health care company (listed in the Inc 5,000 fastest growing private companies), which keeps me busy and mostly out of trouble. We currently have over 3,000 employees and expected to pass 4,000 in 2016. I have some very smart partners and they carry me! (see update below)
Update: There are five children, three sons and two daughters, and two step daughters. I am very proud of all of them. There are also eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
I travel a bit more for business than I would like to, but there seems to be no limit to my enjoyment of travel for fun! Cruising is my favorite way to go. Our family European cruise is now history and a good time was had by all 27 of us.
Update: Finished my bucket list goal of visiting all fifty states in 2001. Will finish my goal of visiting all seven continents next month as I travel to South America and Antarctica.
UPDATE: OK, The Continents bucket list is finished! Loved it! My favorite was the visit and landings on Antarctica. What is next? Planets? Also, sold the inpatient portion of our businesses this spring and never reached 4,000 employees. I am actually happy about that! We now have something less than 150 employees but are intent on making our mark on the Home Health industry. Great opportunities abound to increase the quality and effectiveness of care and deliver the outcomes that everyone wants.
Update: now adding countries, Up to 56 currently...Expand for more
as of 7/19.
Celebrated with a cruise to the Baltic countries and a stay in Berlin. Loved it! We traveled to Sweden, Finland Russia, Germany and Denmark.
Visited the islands of the South Pacific and loved it. My favorite was Fiji, I loved the people, especially the children. In several villages we visited, the kids were off track and amazing.
Update: We added a Family Alaska Cruise to to our memories. All 45 of us had a great time!
We took 46 members of our family on our third family cruise, this time to Hawaii.
We also spent a week at Turtle bay on the north coast of Oahu. It was so good to gather them from all over and have us all together! They come from NY, FL, UT, CA, OK, and oh yeah, TX and of course Porcupine Flats in northern Saskatchewan, Canada.
Since then we enjoyed Norway above the arctic circle in February 2019 chasing the Aurora Borealis (Brrrrrrrrr) as well as a visit to Ecuador and an expedition to the Galápagos Islands. UPDATE 4/28/22: current travel Talley: STATES: 50; CONTINENTS: 7; COUNTRIES: 64. (it would be over 70, but thanks to Covid my three 2020 scheduled trips were canceled and my traveling was suspended. My only trips have been to see family in Utah and Florida.
I have just about decided to curtail the global travel and focus on the national parks. I have visited 22 of them over my lifespan but would love to visit many of them again as well as visit the ones I have not yet seen. I purchased an Old Fart Lifetime pass and intend to use it!
My recent profile picture is with Suzanne and Joye, my daughter, from a recent expedition trip to Denali in Alaska.
The Current Profile picture (7/19) was from earlier this year at an event in Philadelphia.
Just changed the profile picture. In it, I am sitting on the upper patio near the pool enjoying a virgin Pina Colada trying to drink around the lovely, bit inedible Hibiscus flower Suzanne dressed it up with😉
