Doug's Story

My family moved to RR Robinson in 1970, and I was lucky to spend my last 2 years of high school at Hiawatha High. Played on the football team where we beat my old school in 1970, but lost to them the next season of the '71-'72 school year (that would be Nemaha Valley in Seneca, KS). After high school I went pretty much aimless for about 7 years, then met my wife of the next 32 years, and we now have 2 married daughters and 3 grandchildren with another on the way. After getting married my wife Lois and I went to Pittsburg State University, and finished college in 1984. She graduated first because she was in line just ahead of me. She became a teacher and has taught in Kansas, Arkansas and Ohio over the years, and continues to this day with the Cleveland (OH) Public School System. I ended up with a degree in Manufacturing Production Technology-Metals from Pitt State, and went to work managing foundry operations in a western Kansas ductile iron foundry. After about a year, I switched jobs, and started work for the Poulan/Weed Eater company in Nashville, AR. That job had us moving back and forth from Arkansas to Ohio (2 times in each state) until health problems led to an early retirement in 2008. In 1990 my heart started giving me fits, and I had my first open heart operation 7 days past my 36th birthday. That was a triple bypass operation followed by a sternectomy that was necessary due to a penicillin resistant staff infection that was contracted during the initial operation. This was no fun whatsoever, but was followed 10 years almost to the day later by a series of heart catheter procedures and the installation of 10 stents in various locations around the heart. By the time this series of malfunctions was concluded, three different doctors were urging me to back off of work, and pursue an early, disability retirement. This I did at the end of 2008, and I miss my work and fellow employees, but I don't miss traveling 3 to 5 days a week year around and all the stress and worry of constantly arguing with governmental environmental agencies throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. My favorite memories of Hiawatha include the beautiful trees, the old school building (3 floors? I'm not sure I remember), the extended lunch hours we had to get away from school because we didn't have a cafeteria (I think it was condemned, not sure of that either). Lunch with JT Bradley, Jim Benson, Neil Tewes, playing pitch and riding in JT's Ford Falcon remain great memories for me. Simple memories, but resistant to the passage of time. al studies teacher was pretty amazing, and I'll never forget how he came down the stairs from the teacher's lounge after a break. He kind of bump-slid down the stairs, and could navigate the steps faster than about anyone else. Mr. Weast, who was our history teacher, was also our bus driver, and years after leaving Hiawatha I was working in a truck tire re-cap factory in Iola, KS and by complete coincidence met and worked with Mr. Weast's uncle. He told me stories about a young Mr. Weast that would have been highly valuable while I was in high school, but, alas, they came far too late to be of any help. My favorite head football coach was Coach Strahm, but I also really liked Coach Corn who was the lineman coach in '70-'71. Nadine Percy was my favorite teacher, although Grace Owens was a close 2nd. Typing class was a blast, and it came in handy when the personal computers hit the market whenever that was. For anyone who knew our folks, Dad, who was pastor of Zion United Methodist out in the country north of Robinson, died on October 19, 2005. He had Alzheimer's disease, and my prayer for all of you is that you never have a love one contract and die from that hideous means of departure from this life! If you do, call me and we can commiserate. Mom died on January 7, 2011 of complications from a multiple procedure heart operation she had toward the end of 2010. She struggled mightily, but died quite peacefully. My wife and I live in Strongsville, OH. Give me a shout if you ever get up in this area. It wasn't so much by choice as by coincidence: we just happened to be living here when I was facing retirement. Our daughters both live nearby, and I help with providing day care for the 3 grandchildren. So far I have 7 baby years experience with this next generation: Rebekah is 4, Elijah is 2, and Ella is 9 months. It still strikes me as being amazing what these little people can do! Hope you find some of this interesting; I would really like to hear how things worked out for you. Take care! January 12, 2014 Update. On December 9, 2013 my youngest brother, Gregory died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Troy, MO. My brother Mike (Hiawatha class of 1974) and I were with him as well as his family, wife Trisha, sons Clinton and Eric, daughter in law Carmen (Clint's wife), and grandson Preston. Still trying to recover from the loss, and not really convinced I ever will. Update October 18, 2016. Now we're up to 4 grandkids, the last born on 11/12/13. The rest are in school now, so my granddad daycare is down to 1. Lena is a great little one!
