Douglas's Story
Life
After High School I joined the Navy, although my naval career lasted all of two weeks on account of the fact my feet hurt all the time. The camp podiatrist told me that I had flat feet (duh, big shocker there, I had problems with my feet in 10th grade)and I was going home(so my Naval career consisted of a taxpayer funded trip to San Diego). So I came back to Virginia and worked at various jobs until I found one I liked well enough so that I was able to talk my dad into co-signing a bank loan so I could buy a little piece of Jap-crap Ninja(had I been a real man, I would've bought a real motorcycle-a Harley.(But of course,I was'nt a real man at that time,I was only a 21 year-old punk kid).So of course,I wrecked my Ninja.(All of this said TIC)It was a lot of fun,I turned 22 in the hospital.I owned my Ninja for 62 days at which time I rammed it into the front of a Park Ranger pickup on Skyline Drive at 80 mph as he was coming towards me at the turns' posted 20 mph "max safe speed", for a combined impact speed of 100 mph. over as it was His influence I think was completely responsible for my complete recovery(with the speed I was going, and the injuries I had sustained, combined with the amount of blood I lost,I should be dead, or at least severly disabled and/or brain damaged).I think this because coincidentally(I don't believe in coincidences), Shenandoah National Park just "happened" to be conducting EMT training that day,so that over a hundred EMT's were available to respond to the accident scene and Pegasus,UVA's lifeflight helicopter just "happened" to be available. I was airlifted off the mountain to the UVA Medical Center(had my first and to date only helicopter ride and I was comatose for it)where I spent the next 18 hours in surgery,5 weeks in intensive care and about five months in the hospital, dividing my time between UVA,Fairfax Hospital, and Mount Vernon Rehab. It took me about 5 years to recover completely,(October of '85 to late 1990,I had to start basically from zero, learning to walk again, talk again and to do most things everyone takes for granted). But now,I've got a good job and am working full time.
