Dr. Linda Cantey's Story

Life After graduation from college in 1971, I married Richard Slonim. We moved to Washington State--Seattle--where Richard pursued educational opportunities at the University of Washington. I worked with the Northwest Indian Economic Development Association on behalf of the Flathead Indian Reservation. We enjoyed the recreational activities of the Great Northwest and made many lifetime friends there. In 1974 we moved to San Diego, California, where Richard continued with his naval career. I enrolled in San Diego State University and received a Master's Degree in Special Education. I worked for the San Diego Unified School District in an inner city school where I taught learning disabled and emotionally disturbed students. Here, my interest in other cultures was expanded; most of my students were Hispanic, Vietnamese, and African Americans. I thrived in this environment, but when my Father passed away in 1978, we moved back to Charleston to be near my Mother. I landed a teaching position right around the corner from our home and served as the Resource Teacher for thirteen years. Our son, Matthew, was born in 1983, and he truly is God's greatest gift. In 1991, I was "burned out" with the local educational scene and decided to go back to USC to pursue a doctorate. I commuted back and forth to Columbia, continued as a devoted wife and mother, and formed Educational Consulting Excellence. In 2001, with an earned doctorate in hand, I opened Powerful Learning Solutions, an educational testing and consulting service. I enjoy this but ...Expand for more
recently decided to pursue other opportunities now that our son is 21. He is a Junior at the College of Charleston and plans to attend law school when he graduates. Richard retired as a Commander in the Navy and is now a Technology Director. We have had a good life with the usual ups and downs. Our son, family, close friends, hobbies, and purposeful work keep us active and satisfied. Having previously traveled extensively at home and abroad, we do not have that itch. I continue to be an avid reader, researcher, and writer but have recently caught the gardening bug. Both Cady, our beloved Boxer, and Emily, our Feline Queen, are constant companions. Most of all, I have learned to appreciate fully the simpler things in life and to seize the blessings that each new day offers. I would like to reconnect with old friends and schoolmates to remember "when" and to find out how they are doing. Life goes on. College Learning is an important part of my life. I love the intellectual stimulation and getting to know a wide variety of people. Formal learning has included: 1971--BA English/Education, USC 1978--MEd., San Diego State University 1996--IMA (Interdisciplinary Master of Arts) USC 1996--Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies, USC 2001--Doctor of Education, USC From now on, I plan to concentrate on informal learning activities that tap into personal interests such as watercolor and oil painting and gardening. I want to learn Spanish. I need a few practical skills such as plumbing, car repair, and home maintenance.
