Dr. Raymond Lynn's Story

Life Dr. Raymond-Lynn Boothe (sometimes spelled Raymond-lyn) was born in Oak Hill, Ohio on April 24, 1953. He was the fifth child of Raymond and Ruth N. Boothe. He attended Kinnison Elementary School in Jackson, Ohio and attended Jackson High School where he graduated in 1971. In high school his interests were glee club, band, history and government. After high school he attended the Capital University Conservatory of Music where he was a member of the Capital University Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir and Concert Band. At Capital he studied choral music with Dr. Lewis E. Whikehart, toured Europe and the Eastern United States and graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal and Instrumental Music Education. During this time Boothe was also a member and performer with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Opera Columbus. In 1975 after graduation Boothe earned a scholarship and assistanship to Eastern Illinois University to study choral conducting and music education. He graduated there in 1976 with a Masters of Arts Degree in Music. After that he attended the University of Illinois to study choral music with Harold Decker and Music Education with Charles Leonhard and Mary Hoffman. In 1987 Raymond-Lyn began teaching at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He studied interdisciplinary fine arts (architecture, music, art history, dance, photography), the philosophy of music education and curriculum and instruction. In 1993 he received a triple Ph.D. in Education from the Ohio University. Dr. Boothe has also studied at the Ohio State University, The Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada), Vandercook College of Music, Franklin University, The Paul Christiansen Choral School and the Lexington School of Theology. Dr. Boothe has played with the Rio Grande College Symphonic Band and the Great Seal of Ohio Concert Band. Dr. Boothe began his teaching career in the Waverly City Schools where he taught band and choir K-12 for three years. After teaching band and choir in the Circleville City Schools he returned to Jackson where he taught glee club and the Eisteddfod for the remaing of his public school teaching career. He was the the last full-time director of the Eisteddfod Program in the Jackson City Schools. Dr. Boothe also served on the National Eisteddfod Committee and was Chairman of the National Gymanfa Ganu Performance Committee. He was also a successful Jr. High Football coach at Jackson High School as well. While at Jackson he started the OMEA District 17 Honors Choir at Ohio University. Dr. Boothe has also taught music and fine arts at The Ohio University-Athens, The University of Rio Grande, Washington State Community College and The University of Findlay. At the University of Findlay he was named "A Teacher Who Made A Difference" by the students and faculty. Dr. Boothe has always had an interest in the history of Jackson. He wrote the booklet "River of Iron: A History of the Globe Iron Company. He is currently writing a series of articles on the Jackson Iron and Steel Company (JISCO). Dr. Boothe is an avid photographer and has over 6000 photos of the iron and steel industry in the United States. He has been involved in several historical restoration projects in the United States including The Calumet Industrial Heritage Project. The Tod Engine Foundation, The Bethlehem Gas Engine Restoration Team, The La Belle Engine Project, The Northwest Indiana Museum of Steel and Labor and The National Museum of Industrial History of the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Boothe has received many awards throughout his career. Although he is a retired music educator and Eisteddfod director he has been twice nominated for "Who's Who in American Education" and "Who's Who in Music" In addition he has been a contest adjudicator for the Ohio Music Education Association and has been a member of that organization for 35 years. ce for Music Education, The Jennings Foundation, The Longenberger Foundation, The National Gymanfa Ganu Foundation, and the Jackson City Board of Education. He was among the first group of music educators in the United States to be desiginated a "Nationally Registered Music Educator" (NRME) and a "Nationally Certified Music Educator" (NCME). Boothe is a member of many organizations including the Ohio Music Education Association, The National Association for Music Education, a life member of the American Choral Directors Association, a life member of the Welsh Gamanfa Ganu Association, The Ohio and National Educational Association, The Society of Industrial Archeology, The Association for Iron and Steel Technology, Organization for American History, The Society for the Study of Education, The Organization of American Historians, Society for the Study of Technology, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Delta Kappa and the Newcomen Society of Great Britian. Dr. Boothe has been a performer in many musicals and plays at the University of Rio Grande, including "The 1940's Radio Hour," "Fiddler on the Roof," and "The Secret Garden." Locally he has been active in the Jackson Retired Teacher's Association, Jackson Lions Club and has served on the Board of the Jackson High School Alumni Association. He is the composer of the music of "The Official Jackson High School Alma Mater." Dr. Boothe is a Lutheran and attends Faith Lutheran Church in Jackson. At Faith Lutheran he participates in the choir, served as a member of the worship committee and is a volunteer for Lutheran Social Services. He is also the director and conductor of the singing group Faith Lutheran "Kantorei," which specializes in historic Lutheran and European Music. Dr. Boothe also created the Welsh Industrial Heritage Museum at the University of Rio Grande and established the Jefferson Furnace Site in Oak Hill, Ohio as an Official Ohio Bicentennial Site. He designed the historical iron marker that is placed on the site. In 2008, Dr. Boothe was included in "Who's Who Amoung Executives and Professionals." Currently Dr. Boothe is studying at Trinity Lutheran Theological Seminary to recieve his Associate in Ministry Certification. Dr. Boothe has been married for 36 Occupational Therapy from The Ohio State University and the M.S. plus 15 in Education from The Ohio University. She worked for Ohio University for seven years and is currently the Occupational Therapist for The Vinton County Local School District in Ohio. Pam also works for Heartland of Jackson. They have two sons. Paul who lives with his wife Angila and children in Niles, Ohio. Paul is a Senior Master Sargeant in the United States Air Force Reserve. He holds an Associate Degree in Airport Management from the Community College of the Air Force and is currently working toward his B.A. in Management from Franklin University. Senior Master Sgt. Boothe has served in the Middle East, Germany and the Western United States. Paul is currently assigned to the Youngstown-Warren Air Reserve Station near Niles, Ohio. Their youngest son, Patrick is a graduate of Miami University (Ohio) and holds a B.A. Degree in Architecture. After a year of internship with Hughes Architects, he finished his Masters Degree in Architecture (with Honors) from Washington University in St. Louis. Three years ago, Patrick studied in Venice, Italy.and two summers ago he worked in Columbus, Ohio with R.P. Hughes Architects. Last fall, he did his masters research in Argentina and Brazil, and in the spring of 2009 he did his masters thesis with the United States Steel Corporation in Granite City, Illinois. Patrick received his National LEED Certification last summer (Leader in Environmental and Energy Design). Patrick is curently working with FormDesign, an architectural design company in Washington, D.C. The Boothe's have three grandchildren.
