Steven's Story
Life
Hmmm. Where to start? After graduating in 1970, I attended Texas Wesleyan College, finishing in 1973 with a B.A. in history. I started working at the old Fort Worth Press while in college, and I went to work there full-time as a reporter in 1973. When the Press went out of business in May of 1975, I took the opportunity to finish a master's degree in history and journalism at North Texas State. I then moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to work for the morning newspaper there. I got there just in time to cover Elvis Presley's death. (Believe me: He's REALLY dead!) I moved back to Texas -- Austin -- in 1981 to work for the Austin American-Statesman newspaper as investigative reporter. e Lord's call in 1983 and entered the Episcopal seminary in Austin, graduating in 1986. I have served churches in Austin, College Station, Houston, Marshall, and Lubbok, Texas. On September 1, 2007, I became the dean of Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral in Fargo, North Dakota. I completed my doctorate at the Austin Presbyterian seminary in 1995. I still write. I still play music. I still compose poetry. I am a Christian clown. And I still think that George Harrison's song "While my guitar gently weeps" (with Eric Clapton playing the lead) is the greatest rock song ever written. My wife is a music teacher and opera singer; and my daughter lives and works in Austin. And I still don't understand what the EHHS alma mater is all about! I mean, "Eastern Hills, awake the sun" . . . what is THAT supposed to mean?
