Fred's Story

Holy crap, there are 20,000 characters allowed to cover over 40 years since I've graduated high school (CVHS - '79). Luckily I'll only need a fraction of the character limitation. I'm not in to social media - so this and LinkedIn are basically the only places on the net that actually has anything posted about me (by me). LinkedIn has a work profile so there's not much there. I did open a Facebook page, but only to locate someone that lost their wallet/purse. Long story, here's the short version - kid loses wallet in the water. I find it the next AM on the beach. There's ID that indicates the person is on vacation (actually in San Diego to celebrate their 21st birthday) and looks to have just withdrew a couple hundred bucks from an ATM. Then the weird thing was I noticed the person was born on the same day/year as my son. After opening the Facebook page I was able to get a message to the owners relatives that got me in contact with the person. All good - Facebook actually served a purpose other than pissing people off because of silliness like "un-friending" or making posts (political, religious, whatever) that upsets others. Where was I? Oh yeah, between the time I got out of high school and now... In the 40 years since graduating high school, I've basically worked the same job. It's been an interesting career and we'll see how much longer it lasts. Three outcomes, either it kills me, spits me out as a mental patient or provides me the ability to last a few more years after retirement. Face it, if you're in the class of '79, then you're pushing 60 which means that if you took care of yourself, then hopefully the remainder of our time will be pleasant, as long as we don't have some other medical malady or mental issue kick the crap out of us. I've been fortunate (if you want to call it that). I've visited about a quarter of the worlds countries...Expand for more
(over 60 of 'em) which gives a person a little perspective if they think of complaining about how we live in the USA. As far as international travel goes, I hope I'm done with it. I still have about 6 or 7 states to hit to have made it to all 50. Both of my parents have "moved along" as I'm sure most other parents have of those that graduated 40 years ago. If you are fortunate enough to have your parents around, do yourself a favor and ask them as much as possible about their lives when they were growing up because when they're gone, you'll wish you had (if you hadn't). I thought I knew a lot about my parents until they passed on, then I realized I didn't know much, Were they as wild, crazy and carefree as me? I'll never really know. Looking back, before high school, I have to believe that we were probably the last generation to truly understand what it meant to be free. We didn't have cell phones that would tie us to our parents or allow them to track our where-abouts. We could basically go about our business without wondering if there were camera's tracking our every move. At my age, I really don't care if someone knows where I am. However, when I was a kid it's a good thing I wasn't tracked else my parents would have probably attached a ball and chain to my leg if they had a clue of what we used to do... Crap, over 17,000 characters left and several episodes of programming to binge watch. I guess I'll just end this for now (24MAY20) and see if I can add to it a little later. To the '79 grads of CVHS (and others) - be well. If you see me around town (yes, I still live in Chula Vista), say hello if you recognize me. I've recognized people from my past and would walk up to them and ask them if they went to CVHS and/or graduated in the class of '79. It's always neat to see someone from the past, even if you really didn't know them that well.
