Butch's Story

I graduated from Modoc Union High School in 1960 after attending high schools in Escondido and Riverside, and attended Palomar College, and graduated from California Baptist College (Now University) in 1965 with a BA, and Troy State University in 1977. with a MSc. After teaching Jr High students in Modesto 1965 - 1966, I joined the Air Force as an officer in '66, where I remained for 25 years. In 1964 while still in college, I married May Campbell and we just celebrated our 58th anniversary. We have three children -- two girls and a boy -- 12 grandchildren, and a great grandson. Both daughters are stay-at-home moms and homeschool their kids. My son is an IT systems analyst with an insurance company headquartered here in San Antonio, and he served in the AF as an Air Traffic Controller.. I had many opportunities for travel in the Air Force and visited 38 countries during my service. I had two overseas assignments, one in the Philippines, and another in Turkey. I also had assignments to Sacramento, San Antonio (three assignments at two different bases), Springfield, MA, Omaha, NE, and the Pentagon in DC. At retirement, I was the Inspector General at Lackland AFB. I have lived in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio since since transfer here in 1988. A highlite was traveling to Cape Canaveral, FL in Jul '69 and observing the launch of Apollo 11. My most enjoyable assignments was a diplomatic assignment to the American Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. During that assignment, we were able to visit Israel, Jordan, Italy and many Biblical sites in Turkey, including the Seven Churches of Revelations. I also had temporary duty to Germany, Iran, and Pakistan during my two-year Turkey assignment. In this position, there were only two people in my chain-of-command, two between myself and the Commander-in-Chief, the President. The most professionally challenging assignment for me was as the Executive Officer of the National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NE...Expand for more
ACP -- Google (Boeing E-4 or Doomsday Plane) where I accumulated 200 flight hours in the E-4B aircraft. The on-board battle-staff is comprised of members of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, members of all the services, and is prepared to take the President, or his successor, aboard in order to manage a national crisis such as a nuclear war. On March 30, 1981 I was the on-board watch officer at Andrews AFB when President Reagan was shot. The most professionally satisfying assignment for my career was as the commander of a military processing station in Massachusetts. Our mission was to qualify young people wanting to join the military services. After the recruiters would find them, we tested them, did their physicals, and shipped them to their basic training bases. For a period, I was an adjunct professor for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. I also maintained a Private Pilot's license. I After retiring from the Air Force, I worked at the Defense Language Institute at Lackland AFB for ten years as a liaison officer for Kuwaiti students attending the Institute. For the next 13 years I was a contracted investigator credentialed by four Federal agencies to conduct national security background investigations. I am actually retired now, I particularly enjoy RV camping with my wife and grandchildren, metal detecting, astronomy, target shooting, my three Husqvarna chainsaws, and my grandkids, not in that order. I also enjoy being a member of the outdoor maintenance team and the security team at my church, Bulverde Baptist Church. I have been a member of the Gideons International since 1968, and am one of those men responsible for placing copies of God's Word in the hospitals, hotels and motels. My favorite verse, Philippians 1:6 says "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Christ." My hope is for God to say someday say "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
