Duane's Story
Life
After grad, I went to UVIC for a year and took general sciences. Didn't like UVIC - too pretentious! So, I went to BCIT and got a diploma in civil and structural technology. I worked at McDonald's on Robson Street with Andy Bates. Andy went on to have a great career with McD and I got a job with BC Railway working on the Tumbler Ridge Branch Line. I was a geotechnical tech and tunnel inspector.
In 84, I got a job as an engineering technologist with Hardy and Associates in Burnaby. I was fortunate enough to teach the night school concrete technology course at BCIT for about 7 years. I spent my single life skiing, windsurfing, concert going and partying.
I met my wife Brenda at Hardy in 1986 and we got married in 1987, so it will be 20 years coming up. We bought a house in New Westminster in 92 and still live in New West. I spent a fair bit of time working on the house.
In 93, I left Hardy (called AGRA after several buy-outs) and started m...Expand for more
y own engineering consulting business. I work with another engineer in town. We have been quite lucky and successful so far.
In 96, I took the plunge and went back to UBC to get my B.ASc. in civil engineering and registered as a P.Eng in 2004.
In 98, we had our twins, Heather and Alexander, who will be eight soon. Going from zero to two kids was quite a shock. Ian came along in 01. Thankfully we didn't have another set of twins. There are several sets of twins on Brenda's side, so the potential for more is quite high. The kids are high energy and keep us quite busy.
My folks still live in the same house in Glen Lake (since 1974) and my sister lives up on the Malahat. We get over to the island about three times a year to visit. So much has changed and I don't really see too many people from high school days. I still keep in touch with Dave Cull (lives in Seattle now) and Dave's brother Harold. We go see the odd concert and play some golf.
