Ed's Story

Life Living in Suffolk Va (since early 1998) with wife (Shirley, married in early 1968) and our part-Siamese cat (Pixy, adopted in 2011), on a salt-water tidal creek/marsh (Hoffler Creek) off the James River (Southside) on the upstream side of Craney Island. Have a 4-place paddle boat, several inflatable canoes, an 11'8" Mokai jet drive kayak, and a 17' trimaran sport sailboat that can use our shallow water creek branch. Added a pier with deep water dock and boatlift on the main creek for the 17' sailboat. He retired from a nearby shipyard in 2015 and she retired from a nearby computer server facility in 2013. On 12/21/2011, he had open-heart surgery to replace his original aortic valve with a biologic valve at Norfolk Sentera Heart Hospital and was back to work, etc. on 2/1/2012. It's good for at least 15 more years. Yeah! We are planning to buy a replacement home just South of Fredericksburg, Va., and West of I-95 in Spotsylvania County by 2017. Want to begin rural style retired living, as simple as possible. Grass is always greener over the septic tank / drain field. Also, want to experiment with solar cells, wind generators, wood fireplaces / furnaces, etc. Daughter (Dawn, born 1970) and her husband (Jay, 2 years older) live in Chesterfield County Va (near Richmond) 1.5 hours away via Route 10. She did PR for the VDOT Richmond area until early 2014. When it snowed, summer heat buckled a highway, etc. you could hear her on WRVA, etc. in Richmond. In early 2014 she was named the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) public affairs director. You could still hear her on WRVA, etc. in Richmond, but if you did then trouble was approaching Va or it was already here and you needed to listen. In 2016 she moved to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) to enjoy life. He is a real estate agent. They have two adopted sons,...Expand for more
Timothy, born 2000, and Austin, born 1997. Son (Erik, born 1972) and his bride (Tara, married 5/9/08 on the beach in Kill Devil Hills NC, see willingbacon) live in Woodbridge Va (near Washington DC) 2.5 hours away via I-64/I-295/I-95. He handles computers in USA government facilities. She works for a relocation company. His son (Aron, born 2000 to him and his former wife) lives in the Phoenix Az area, sorry to say. My brothers (3; Jimmy, Ricky, and Scott), live near Dawn. My sister (Robin) lives near Erik. Father (Ed Sr, born Nov. 1917) died in July 2004 and mother (Daisy, born Mar. 1920) died in March 2011. For transportation we have her 2013 Impreza AWD, our 2003 Camry FWD, his 1999 Silverado 4WD, and our watercraft. Workplaces Just look at my workplaces. Started out full-time close to the bottom as an entry-level Electrical Engineer in 1968 after graduating from Va Tech, advanced to being a Senior Engineer in 1974, then Principal Engineer and supervisor in 1980. In 1983 everything started going to pieces as companies downsized/ceased-to-exist/etc. and I ended up essentially doing contract/temp engineer work. In 1993 became unemployed full-time, 1994 got a 1 year job, and then unemployed again. Age discrimination had set in. Luckily I got my most recent job at my old company (1968-70) in late 1996 as a Senior Engineer (later re-labeled as Engineer 3), which I remained until early 2006 when I became a Project Engineer (later re-labeled as Engineer 4, then combined with 3, so back to a 3 again). For those who know my past assignments I was still doing my power and I&C specialties in that field. You hear about the products of my work quite often in books, Internet sites, magazines, papers, some radio, TV, and the News. I provided electrical power and control modifications for my company's largest product class. We are still having fun, at least I think so.
