Edward's Story

When I was born, my family lived on the south side of Chicago. I was a toddler when we moved to Des Moines, Iowa. I attended kindergarten at Wallace Public School in Des Moines and then Visitation Grade School until fourth grade. In 1957 we moved to Palos Park, Illinois. I attended St. Michael School in Orland Park for 5th, 6th and 7th grade. Then St. Michael went to a short day schedule and my parents moved me to Palos West for 8th grade. I graduated in 1961 and then attended Carl Sandburg High School from 1961 to 65. After leaving Carl Sandburg HS, I attended Michigan State University until 1967. I was in the Army from 1967 to 1969 and spent two years in Viet Nam. After working several years, I went back to college at the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana and married a woman I met at college in September of 1973. In 1975 I received an undergrad degree with a major in History and a minor in English. In 1978 I received a Law Degree (cum laude -- surprised me too) from the U of I Law School. I clerked for the Minnesota Supreme Court from August 1978 to August 1979. Then I became an Associate Attorney at a lawfirm in the Chicago loop, Rothschild, Barry & Myers. Among other cases, we represented McDonnell Douglas in cases arising from the DC-10 Crash in Elk Grove Village in 1979 and represented the Chicago Transit Authority in the CTA strike of 1979. My daughter Mary was born in May 1980. My wife and I separated in the first half of 1981, and divorced later that year. In July of 198...Expand for more
1, I moved downstate to be near my daughter and became an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Illinois, based in Springfield. I worked on cases throughout the state as a senior litigation attorney. In 1983, I met Carole Lesar, an Indiana elementary school teacher, through another Assistant AG, who had been friends with her since childhood. In July of 1984, I became a Corporate Attorney for Inland Steel Company in Chicago, and Carole and I were married in December of 1984. Fast Forward to June of 2005 when I retired as Senior Assistant General Counsel with Arcelor Mittal Steel Company, one of the largest steel companies in the world and successor by several mergers to Inland. In June of 2005, Carole and I bought a home in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas and moved down to help take care of her elderly parents -- they had retired to HSV over 25 years earlier. Carole's parents passed in the last few years, both living at home til the end, as they had wanted, with lots of help from Carole and I. Carole and I have really retired only after her parents had passed. We began travelling throughout the US. We celebrated our 25th Anniversary December of 2009 in Colonial Williamsburg. We've cruised to Panama and Alaske and continue to visit friends and relatives throughout the US. However, in August of 2011, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had already spread to many of my bones. We're still travelling and enjoying life, but we know this story must come to an end in the next few years.
