Elida (Norma)'s Story
Life
Stephens College dance major after BHS. Within 24 hrs of decision to sign recording artist contract to make tapebooks when few knew of them in 7-77, life veered. Director of Gymboree, Sunset Center, Carmel, 1980s. Focus shifted from babies to elderly during 24/7 care for dying mother. Work with hospice since the '80s after 8 years teaching in a conv. hosp. 65 of my family and closest friends died within the last 15 yrs. Given a great gift (with my training) to not only help others, but also myself through grief. A challenging, exciting journey filled with miracles. Have left behind the grief & peer counseling, massage therapy. Now writing, art, tapebooks, photography, music, and dancing in my dreams. Thankful for every day of this life. Much joy & delight. Now the best part of all, knowing who I am & why I am here. Definitely freeing. P.S. Since 9-11-01, I am thankful for this site where friends can reunite. Time to reach out to each other.

ich offered a Dance degree in the early '60's. The head of the Dance dept., Harriette Ann Gray, was one of Martha Graham's top students and when I met Ms. Graham, her face lit up when I told her Harriette Ann was my teacher, counselor, and friend at Stephens College. She said my mentor was one of her best students and a dear friend. I knew I was blessed with this teacher and many of my life experiences. Stephens was the best and the worst of all worlds. The worst was being accused of something about which I knew nothing in my innocence and having the dean of women, "dorm mothers," and students spread lies about me. The best was my dance, mentor, friends, and depth of learning. It was a challenge having surgery on my foot instead of going to Perry/Mansfield in the summer to get my four year degree at a two year school which was still a finishing school, but if I had continued dancing, no doubt I would be much more crippled than I am. I am thankful for all the truly good friends and experiences at Stephens.
