Elise's Story
I graduated from OBU with a degree in voice (and anthropology minor) in 2006. I received an M.A. and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Indiana University-Bloomington, where I've worked in a sound and video lab and been fortunate to spend several academic years and summers as a language and area studies fellow. Currently I am an AI for a 100-level course in world music. My research focuses on performance (theories of), constructivism, and symbolism, broadly speaking. I'm in the beginning stages of writing a proposal for dissertation research in northwest China and Central Asia. My interests in this region of the world have led me to study a number of languages: Turkic (not Turkish but...Expand for more
the broader language family from which Turkish is derived), Persian, and Mandarin. While language-learning is often exhausting, I find it immensely useful and rewarding. I hope to research, publish, and teach in a university setting someday.
My studies constitute most of my life, and I like it that way. Despite the stress associated with graduate studies leading toward a career in academia, I find it a real pleasure (and privilege) to make my living from studenthood. My interests beyond academia include beer and wine, farmer's markets, cooking and baking, entertaining, doing yoga, jogging (I'm training for a half marathon in spring 2010), and spending time with my boyfriend of two and a half years.
