Elizabeth (Lisa)'s Story

Life Hello, Looking back I think I have had a pretty exciting life. I have also been blessed with good friends, a beautiful son and a wonderful husband (not necessarily in that order!) I grew up in Montreal West with my best friend Rochelle and went to Edinburgh Elementary and Wagar High. I feel truly privileged to have had some amazing teachers, including Carol Singman and Norman Feigan (whose mother I used to visit as a preschooler). High school was not a pleasant experience thanks to the many bullies and thoughtless individuals who thought it was OK to judge people by their appearance. Imagine being the child of holocaust survivors and being harassed by my fellow jews for being a fat person. Luckily I had some great friends who stood with me. It took me a while to shed my victim personality but I did. CEGEP and university (McGill) were awesome and I had a great time. Thanks to some amazing professors at McGill I stayed on and did my master's in Neurobiology under the supervision of Dr. Robert L. Levine. He was a great thesis supervisor and a life long friend. I started a PhD in Philadelphia but realized that lab work wasn't the life for me. So I moved back to Montre...Expand for more
al and started working in the non-profit sector. Most of my work has related to human rights or health care. Just about the time of the move, my brother Mike was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia. Thankfully I was found to be a perfect match and was able to donate bone marrow. Now my brother, who was such a guiding light to me as a child, shares my very blood. If I had to say what thing I've done that I am most proud of, it would be saving my brother and giving his wife and daughters a chance to keep him in their lives. A few years ago I met my husband and moved to Guelph Ontario. I currently work at the University of Guelph. The community is very ecology and agriculture minded and reminds me a bit of NDG. I still call Montreal my home and realize how much of a Quebecer I am. There are so many people that I have fuzzy warm feelings for and want to thank them for making my life so full. In particular, thank you to Peter Loomer, Todd & Lorne Shapiro, Mia Ginter, Yaniv Loran, Cindy Potechin, Peter Rosenthal and Rochelle Lieberman for helping make my high school years bearable. And please forgive me if I have forgotten to put your name in the list. Have a good one!
