Elizabeth's Story

I played on the first girl's basketball team in 1974-1975 and we won the conference that year. I played forward. The Stewart's dad used to always make fun of me in a goodnatured way of course because my socks always fell down on my skinny legs and I was always rebounding and defending but not much of a shooter. Left Germany in 1975, went to college in Washington state. Joined an AFROTC unit and was sent to Las Vegas (Nellis AFB as my first assignment). While I was there Amy Fleming also moved there. She was my roommate for a few months until she met her husband who was a Haitian guy. She had a son there. I am not sure where she is now. I stayed in the military for 15 years, took early retirement as a Major in 1995. I went to Gulf War I to Saudi in 1991, went to Guantanamo in 1992 on a joint force humanitarian mission for the Haitian Refugees. I was a Public Affairs officer. My speciality was media relations and speech writing. I did a press conference for Cheney once when he was the secretary of Defense. What an underwhelming experience. I went to work on my Ph.D in 1998; finished it in 2003. I am a university professor at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah Georgia. I just got a book published and it should be on the market in May. It is on Hip Hop rhetoric. I will post more on it when it officially hits the market. My students call me "Dr. C, da O.G." Jus think folks we missed rap music by about 4 years:) Update: In June 2014 I published my second book about African American women who served in the Gulf Wars. It's called Marching as to War: Personal Narratives of African American Women's Experiences in the Gulf Wars. Oh yeah for those of you who remember Peta Gaye Edwards, she wa...Expand for more
s a good friend of mine. She has two beautiful children; her daughter is my god child. She lives somewhere in California. She is still Pete. I was never one of the "popular kids" at BK, but I knew them all and hung out when I could. My friends were the church crowd (remember the FFFers?) My close friends were Peta Gaye Edwards, Donna Hale Sarita Maybin, later Debra Yakle and Ann Russell. I used to go clubbing with Debra and Ann who were totally different outside of the classroom than in. I was a wise cracking kid who had visions of being Angela Davis and Nikki Giovanni (both of whom I have met in my lifetime) but I will always fondly remember my BK times, even shocking the heck of of most people when I sang "We've Only Just Begun" at the 1975 BK graduation. I remember having short hair during the days when everyone had the big afros and long hair and having to endure being called "baldy baldy eagle, having my gender questioned. However I am proud to say I was able to go beyond all of that. I am especially proud of my shoulder length black dred locks and how people compliment me on my hair. I have decided not to stop growing them until they get down my back, which should be about 3 years give or take :) I have some pictures of 1974-75 BK basketball games and shots of the cheerleaders and I hope to publish them soon. Oh yes, I did marry; twice. I was not able to have children but have raised several as foster children. I am doing exactly what I have always wanted to do in life and to me I can attribute that to the old "BK beat em, bust em', that's our custom" spirit. My students dared me to find out about my old school mates, so I stumbled on this site. I am glad I did. Thanks for reading this.
