Elly's Story
I was a spontanious, but extremely insecure kid. I wanted to be part of the "cool" crowd, but never felt as if I really fit in. Probably because I came from another country, although by the time I started grade 1 at Prince of Wales, I felt Canadian. Unfortunately, my parents never did, and they controlled everything about my life. Our Principal, Mr. Law was my own personal boogeyman. I was in terror of the man, although for the life of me, I don't know why. I loved my eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Banting. I remember every single one of my eight teachers Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Simpson, Miss Sample, Miss Lovett (a British exchange teacher), Mrs. Harris, Mr. Froom (or maybe t was Frome), Mrs. Banting and Mr. Cathers (our new Principal starting 1960) Do any of you remember those teachers and Principals? They're probably all gone now, although some of them were my parent...Expand for more
s' age, and my mother is still alive at 95. I swear she will outlive us all! My Dad had a bakery in Barrie, which he closed in 1961, after I graduated from grade 8, and we moved away to British Columbia. We never left and I now live on Vancouver Island (paradise), in Duncan. My dad died iin 1998. I have 2 sons and 3 step-daughters - who came with a most wonderful husband. I wrote a book a few years ago, chronicling the nutso (I know, it's not a word) experiences that dog our steps. It turned into a crazy biography of sorts. Never did find a publisher, but printed and bound enough boooks myself for each family member. The only person I forgot to make one for was me! We just celebrated an 8th grandchild into the fold. I am retired, loving life, busy with my art and enjoy a tongue-in-cheek kind of respect as caroonist for a local newspaper. I'll never be famous, but I try.
