Elvina's Story
Daughter of Mary Mercier and Paul Lee La Strappe ( lastrape ), born in Saint Martinville 11-18. 4 sisters - Two brothers. lived on Washington Street, attended Notre Dame Catholic elementary school ( I remember being an angel every Xmas for midnight mass). No longer a catholic. Went to Breaux Bridge High in the 9th grade and Adam Carlson High from 1959 thru 1962, left Louisiana, relocated to Houston Texas during my senior year. Graduated from Evans E. Worthing High in Sunnyside, Houston Texas at the end of 1963.
Headed on to Berkley California to attend colledge. two years later moved to Los Angeles, got married in 1964 (he is now desease ) and spent 1964 thru 1993 there.
While there I did modeling for about two years for Sofiticated Lady Modeling Agency ( No money...have to have money to make money ) Got married (Ex-spouse desease) married for 17 years ( no children ), single for the next 11 years. Was employed by Pacific Telesis Telephone Company for 20 years started as a long distance operator and moved up the ladder to be a FCAS Administrator.
Remarried in 1992. I enjoy reading, anything that has to do with nature and animals ( I think maybe I should have been a vetenerian, I like doing arts and crafts for any occasions. At the phone company...I did all the events and picnics.
Left LA and went to Merrieta Georgia ( beautiful quaint town ) stayed for 6 months ( no decent paying jobs ) Moved on to Texas.
Once arriving in Houston....Expand for more
..I became employed by Texas Children Hospital and later for a future 500 company " Accenture Consulting ", worked there for 7 years and retired at 62 in 12/2006.
I now dedicate my extra time going out in field service and attending my meeting, being with my family and friends. I love cats...I have three and one mix breed, beautiful Pitt and Chow dog.
I plan to return to Saint Martinville for a visit soon and see some of the old friends. I do remember most of my former school mates...such as Irene Berard, Lois St julien, Jenny Ann Fontenette, Rosalyn Pratt, Marie Decuir ( married name), Nelson and Linda Davis, Novella, Casidy and Hilda, Willie Lewis, Anthony Larence, Sherry Durand, Henricks, Frankie Andrews, Louis Durand, Angnes Lewis, Bertha Begnot...Chester, Goldie Decuir just to name a few.
Oh how I remember all the good time there at home....the holidays and the goodold southern smell of good cerole and cajun cooking. But I also remember the old spooky cemeteries there. But above all that I have encountered in my life time so far....I would not trade Louisiana for any other place.
I hated to hear that Saint Martinville has changed and is no longer the pretty little town that it use to be and no jobs.
Well enought of my life...going to let someone else express their opinions and tell their life story.
But one thing...........the book " Execution of Willie francis " is making Saint Martinville popular again
READ IT....very interesting.
