Elvita's Story

Life High school was not exactly the best of times for me. I remember feeling anxious, and confused about who I really was. Despite this, I made some amazing friends and learned a thing or two. My favourite classes were all English. The best teacher I can remember having was Ms. Robitaille for honors Anatomy & Physiology. I think she was an absolutely amazing teacher. After high school, I attended Lynn University for 1 year, and then the University of Tampa. College life was a lot easier than high school. I really developed into the person that I am today during those four years. I gained a lot of confidence and realized that the majority of people my age where just as confused as I was. I graduated from UT with a BA degree in Psychology in 2003. I worked as a social worker for about 1 1/2 years after college. Loved helping children but hated the rough working conditions and long hours. In 2005, I started working as a history teacher right here in Orlando. Weirdly, I did not like history in high school. I absolutely love being a teacher. I treat the classroom like it is my stage. My future goals are to attend graduate school and get a M.A. degree wither in educational leadership, political science, or social work. School My biggest crush? I'll leave that one a mystery. It was a certain guy who I went to middle school with. There were 2 teachers thatr really inspired me, Ms. Robitaille and Ms. Frink. Ms. Robitaille inspired me because she seemed to be so brilliant. Was there anything that she did not know? I also loved how she seemed to treat everyone the same. Ms. Frink inspired me because I felt that she was the funniest teacher I had during my four years of high school. I fell in love with Shakespeate because of her classes. I will never forget Eugene and Susie snodgrass. All in all, I have to say that I liked the majority of the teachers I has at D.P., so in some way, they all inspired me. If I dould do it all over again, I would. I would be more social and active. I always wanted to try out for one of the plays in drama. I would take my academics more seriously. I know I could have gotten better grades. I would only do it again too, if I could take the wisdom and slelf confidence I learned after high school. College I received a B.A. degree in Psyc...Expand for more
hology in 2003 from the University of Tampa. While there, I became a happier person and got more confidence than I had while in high school. I actually got much higher grades than I did in high school. There were some tough times though; Losing scholarships, hating the cafeteria food, and dealing with horrible roomates. My first 25 page APA style psychology paper for Theories of Pesonality was a nightmare. I procrastinated and tried to write the whole thing in 2 weeks. Needless to say, I got a bad grade. I hated Statistics for the Behavioral Science. Those classes made me sriously want to consider changing my major. All in all, it was a fun experience. Workplace My firt post college job was as a Family Services Counselor with the Department of Children and Families. I did this for about 1 1/2 years. This was a stressful job because I often came into contact with children that were going through some extremely difficult situations. The bect part of my job was when I got a chance to really bond with a child. I met some great kids. After that, I started teaching Social Studies full time. I currently teach American History, Economics, and American Government at a charter school in Orlando. This is somehat strange because I did not like history in high school. I always loved Enlgish and thought if I became a teacher, that would be the subject I would teach. I love teachin but now I understand how some of my own high school teachers felt when students misbehave. Even on the most stressful day, I wouldn't trade teaching for any other job. My dream job would be to do several things. I would like to open up a small group home teenage girls in DCF custody. While being a social worker, I noticed how hard it was to find good temporary homes for some children. I would like this group home to house between 10-15 girls that we can guide to becoming productive members of society. I would also like to earn a MA degree and eentually be able to teach at the community college level. Right now, I am also working on a novel. I hope to one day be able to get it published. I would also love to have a political career. My main focus with that would be inadequacies of the public education system, and closing the ever increasing economic gap in America. Military Are you kidding? Never in a million years.
