Emmett's Story

Life Well here in 2006, I'm twelve years divorced after a fourteen year marriage which produced two daughters and a son. I now have three grandbabies who brighten the world daily. I've never really left the area, having lived in Mesquite the bulk of the years, however I now live in Garland. Some people probably saw me at the Skillern's Drug Store in Broadmoor Plaza that I managed several years following graduation. Immediately following graduation in 74 I attended and graduated from Eastfield Jr. College with plans to attend Stephen F Austin. Perhaps you may have seen me at the soccer fields at Eastfield several years down the road when I coached youth recreational soccer for thirteen years. Due to life circumstances I have failed to attend previous class reunions until the Decade of the 70's reunion which was October 27-28, 2006. It's always good to hear and see old friends from school, so if you want, write me at focus21 at verizon dot net and let's catchup on old times. Also, if you are interested, there is a group of us attempting to stay in touch, come find us on MySpace. School Ok, I probably didn't standout much during my school years as I was somewhat shy and usually hung around with a few close friends and fellow band members. Hopefully I didn't come off as stuckup, because that wasn't it at all. That's right I played trombone in the Mighty Maroon Skeeter Band. Oh yes, there were a few busted lips from marching band which you probably can relate if you played trumpet or trombone, that is until I learned to keep the bell inside the line of fire. The band probably was better known for the lights out drill we performed during many a half-time show. If you participated then you probably remember how much fun it was removing that flashlight which was taped to your ankle. My sophmore year, the band was allowed to attend an out of state function again. Evidently several years prior there had been an issue of some sort where the band traveled to California and someone got into trouble. Anyway we got to go to the Tri-State Competetion in Enid, Oklahoma. We stayed at the Holiday Inn downtown Oklahoma City and all of the girls were placed on one floor, 3rd I believe, and the guys on the 8th or visa versa. There was also a chorus competetion held in the area at the same time and within the same hotel. This was around the time that streaking was popular and someone from that chorus did this on the same floor as the girls. So the guys and girls had to swap floors. Then two years later, my senior year, we traveled to San Antonio for a competetion and were placed in the San Antonio Inn outside of town and near nothing but a small convenience store. During this trip we visited the Botanical Gardens and the Alamo. Several guys purchased Bowie Knives there. On the way back home we stopped to tour the Innerspace Caverns. Some of us had finished and ...Expand for more
were reboarding the bus when an arguement broke out over a particular seat and one of those knives surfaced. Not sure what happened next, but the guy ran off the bus and we all had to wait for what seemed like an hour while they searched the woods for this student. Also while in band we played alongside the Texas Band during a Cowboy game and performed at the inauguration of the DFW Airport. Band probably contributed to my not having become totally invisible during my Junior and High School days. Music is a calming factor in my life and I probably should have persued a musical career of some sort after graduating, especially since I had actually gotten pretty good my junior and senior years. College As you probably already have read, I went straight into college at Eastfield after graduating from MHS. I graduated from Eastfield in '78 and had plans of continuing on at Stephen F. Austin with a Forestry major, but after taking a Chemistry course or two, that plan quickly got snuffed. After the first semester at Eastfield I took about a year off from school, having burned myself out on schooling. While at Eastfield I got into shape with the training program Physical Performance and Swimming, wish I was still in that physical shape... the best of my life. Workplace Alright, I've been in retail pretty much all of my years in the work field. Started at the Pizza Inn there at Broadmoor Plaza while in high school. Hours and pay pretty much sucked and after 5 weeks of making pizza's decided to leave and never return to the restaurant business. Also worked the Payless Shoe Store there before going to work for ShoVan's customizing shop. About a year later started working for Skillern's Drug Store at Town East Mall for Ralph Edge while in College, also worked for Max Crandall at the Broadmoor store before becoming manager. Oh the East Grand store, was an experience all of it's own. After 9 years they sold to Revco which drove the chain out of business then I went to Skaggs Alpha Beta for the next 9 years. Left there the day before the chain was taken over by Albertson's and spent a year raising my kids fulltime. Afterwards I took a job with Drug Emporium for five years with a brief stint at Mechandising Specialists. DE too folded after 9 years, but I had moved on to Best Buy, which is where I am presently working as a Mechandising Spcialist and Functionality Tech. If you noticed a pattern, hopefully it doesn't carryover this time. BBY is a growing company with great benifits. When I entered the company there were just about 200 stores and today there are well over 700 with plans in process for new additions. Military I have always had nothing short of total admiration and respect for our American Service men and women. I have several relatives who have served, some in fairly memorable incidents. The military wasn't for me... one word VIETNAM.
