Erik's Story

I was born in a humble cottage on the moors of Yorkshire. When I was but a wee lad, I found myself named as the Duke of York, and thus obliged to lead ten thousand weary, rag-tag soldiers in bloody combat against the French invaders from Aquitane. I was reluctant, but I silently shouldered my burden and led my troops into that bloody, smoky hell, whatever my destiny would be. Three hours later, I emerged to find myself alone on the field, transported in time to a new body in the very modern 1960's. Thus began my current life. During my youth, I experienced the academically excellent, but window-deprived Howard County school system through middle and high school. Years later, things have turned full circle, and that is now the age group that I am/will be teaching. I went back to school at Western Washington University and earned a Master in Teaching degree. r the future of our fragile republic, and wonder if the next generation will be known as the Illiterati. Between 1981 and the present I've had the good fortune to get out and see at least a few slices of the world. It all started with a college internship to Dublin, where I spent a semester working for a member of the Irish Parliament. After college I traveled around the US and coastal Canada. Most recently, I lived in Berlin for three months. What energy, especially in the East Berlin neighborhood I lived in that is coming back to life after years of dulling totalitarian rule. These days I live in beautiful Bellingham, Washington, seduced by the beauty of our all-too-short summers, and good reception of Canadian radio stations. Where will I be next fall? Probably not here; I need to get on with a full-time teaching position, and this place is swimming with teachers. Us social studies teachers are not in high demand like special ed, ESL, math, or science teachers. So, we shall see. In the meanwhile, say hello if you are coming through Bellingham to the 2010 Olympics 50 miles north in Vancouver, BC. I'm also on Linked-In and Myspace. Cheerio, Erik
