Erlene's Story
I attended Glenview Elementary from 1957-1963. I went on to Glencliff for the 7th and 8th grades. We moved and my high school years were at Overton. It was hard for me not being around the friends I made at Glenview.
I went to Peabody College from 1969-1972. I began teaching in Metro. Nashville (2nd grade) after 3 months of substituting. From then it seems the years just drifted along. I moved after 8 years in 2nd grade to opening a federal reading class for 3rd and 4th graders. Next I taught remedial reading to Transitioning kindergartners through the 6th grade. I saw so much improvement with having them with me in small groups. All of these years were in East Nashville with what was considered "inner-city" students. My last 23 years was with 3rd graders back in the self-contained classroom where I taught all subjects. When I look back, 3rd grade was my favorite grade in elementary school. n elementary principal and had many children. She became an "instant" mom to his children was very happy with her new life).
Teaching was my calling. I was honored with being selected as "Teacher-of-the Year" at four different schools and was a finalist for Nashville on one of those years. I taught many children from the same families - some of whom are now teachers here in Metro.
I retired in 2006, but still work 2 part-time jobs I've had since 2004. I have a wonderful son who is still at home. He graduated from UT in Dec. 2005 with a major in journalism.
I don't know if some of you remember me, but I was relatively quiet back in those days long past. I am still pretty reflective and enjoy reading poetry and short stories. When it warms up, I am outside planting flowers. Two of the five cats I have had in the last 15 years are still living. My son showed me "You Tube" 2 years ago. In the quiet of the night, I like to look up old songs and listen to them.
I'm going to stop here. I think this is a great way to reconnect with people. Thanks for reading this. I hope to see many of you at the 40th year reunion in July.
