Esther's Story

Life I have 4 children, ages 32, 29, 18 & 16. 2 boys and 2 girls. I am an artist doing mostly oil paintings of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes & figural. My art is in a few galleries and is exhibited. I am married, been with him for 20 years and live in southern CA. I travel up to Napa once a year and go back to NY once every few years. I used to be part of a large family of 10 that lived in Binghamton, New York and then Napa, we were not wealthy but rather poor. We used to move every 2-3 years, I think we lived in 4 places in the 10 year stay from 1961-71. Even though financially it was very tough, I look back on those years in Napa as the best years of my life. I was six years old when we first landed in Napa from upstate New York. My dad taught me how to ride a bike then. He was very useful sometimes when he wasn't stone drunk. Which is also the reason we had to run out of the house everyday and find something to do outside, he was too drunk. My mother did most of the business to make money with vacuum cleaner repair. Then dad would sober up enough to make some Electrolux sales so we could eat and pay the rent, bills, buy food, etc... I was a great artist in each of my schools, it was the one thing I knew I excelled at and got the perfect grades on all the time, so I kept drawing and learning art. But I loved physical activities too. Napa was a treasure chest of beautiful nature and I would take off on my bike with a few siblings and we would ride all day. We would stop at Dry Creek Rd or Redwood Rd up in the hills to swim in the creeks for fun. We would look for deer tracks and spot them all over. Those are great memories. Sometimes we would run through the cow pastures and step in the dung and freak out or be chased by bulls, it was hilarious running for our lives. If a farmer spotted us, he would chase us from the field, we could run a lot faster until he used his truck the next time. One farmer pulled out a salt gun but he was a ba...Expand for more
d shot, we escaped up a hill into the trees. I could climb the tallest trees. I loved water, so we usually found ourselves either in the Napa HS pool or some body of water like Bodega Bay or the pond on Los Carneros Rd where we used to live. My sister Maureen had horses out there so I rode alot. I spent many days on a horse bareback, I loved horses and still do. We moved to Morlan Dr in 1969 I think and it was getting pretty bad with my dad, he was never sober anymore and became violent. I started to make school friends and kept away from home as much as possible. It was the hippie era and I felt right at home being a flower child, hippie girl. The black light parties and trips out to the country were great but faded memories. My older sister took me to Berkley and we did a little demonstrating, you know "Power to the People, Right On!" I remember going to Playland in SF, what a fun place with the tons of people. Once Boss Scaggs came to the Napa Fairground to play when I was 15, it was my introduction to attending many more concerts. Sadly, my stay in Napa would be cut short, our dad was given a 5 year life expectancy in 1971 due to cirrhosis of the liver, due to drinking all his life too much. We all had to move back to upstate New York before my sophomore year at Napa HS was even over. I was devastated that I had to leave, my hippie friends wanted me to run away, but I felt a duty to stay with my family and departed. I picked up the hippie scene in Binghamton NY in 1971, I had a lot of fun in those days. I finally settled down in 1974 and got married to my first husband. My father did pass away in 1976, just 5 years like the doctor said. I had two sons in 1977 & 1979, got a divorce and moved to Frederick MD for a few years, then to Washington DC before I finally moved back to the bay area in CA in 1987. I now live in So CA and it's been a long circle. I still miss Napa, I would like to find an artist's retreat cabin up there to buy someday.
