Eugene's Story

After I graduated from high school I attended the University of Wichata for one year studying Electrical Engineering. The following summer , my brother and Adrian Burrows went out to San Jose, California to go to school. They talked Larry Burrows and me to go out there with them so I didn't go back to Wichata. While in San Jose, I picked up another 32 hrs at San Jose City College. When I first got to Calif I weighed in at 118 lbs so I joined a Health club along with my brothers Dennis and Harley. I stayed with it doing heavy weight training for 18 months. I started gaining weight and muscles and reached 140 lbs without any fat on me. I was also doing gymnastics and swimming alot. I got into the best shape of my life. Most of the time that I was in Calif, I worked part time at the post office, which was one of the better paying jots for college students. Towards the end of the 2nd year I was getting short on money so I had to drop out of school and get a full time job. I had been at Ampex Audio doing electronic test of the tape machines and amplifiers that were coming off the assembly lines I received a letter beginning with: Greetings from the Pres. of the USA. So, instead of being drafted, I joined the United States Air Force, because I didn't want to be in the military (Army, Navy, Marines). I signed up for electronics training, since I already had quite a bit of experience in building and repairing numerous electronic things. The second day I was in Basci training, I was pulled out of my flight to take an IBM Programmers Appitude test. The next day I was sent over to the Air Force Human Resources building where I was to be interviewed about changing my career to Computer Programming. I didn't have a clue as to what is was, but it sounded like a good idea so I took it. So on the third day in basic training, I ...Expand for more
already knew where I was going to go. When I told my traing instructor that I kenw where I was going after basic, he assured me that I wouldn't know until after the 7th week of basic. When I showed him my hand written orders, he just shook his head and said that isn't the way it is done. I know that Larry Radke and Larry Burrows can tell you some real horrer about basic training in the Marines, but I breased through. The physical part of it about killed most of the basics in ny flight and a number dropped out. I was in such good shape when I arrived the the PT part didn't bother me at all. I neither gained nor lost weight while the rest either gained up 30 or 40 lbs or lost as much as 50+ lbs. After the first weeks test to see how our academic studies were going, I hardly attended any of the classroom training except the mandatory parts. I was the barracs guard in a somewhat permanent basis. After basic I was transfered to The AF Human Resources Lab for computer programming training, which was 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week for one year. I was selected to stay at the lab to work in the computer room where all of the research programs were run. One of my main assignments was to write demonstration programs to show visitors some of the things that a computer can do. One of the people that I had to show the computer to was Barry Goldwater. I met my wife, Terri, while in the AF at the lab. She was a keypunch operator at the lab and did the punching of my programs a few times. We got married a month after I got out of the AF. Istayed at the lab as a civilian for 8 years. During this time I did all kinds of complex programming in assembly language, Fortran, and COBOL. I am one of the very earliest COBOL programmers since all of the programmers had to learn COBOL because it was developed by the government for the military.
