Eva's Story

After high school, I went to University of Akron to pursue a nursing degree. I played piccolo in the marching band and flute in the symphonic band and absolutely LOVED IT!! I made lots of friends in both the marching band and nursing school. Friends who made a huge impact on my life. I realized for the first time, WOW, there is life outside of Chillicothe, Ohio!! I decided I wanted to explore more of the country and world. When I was a sophomore in college, I asked myself, wow, what am I going to do with the rest of my life. So I enlisted in the Navy under a commissioning program called Bachelors Degree Completion Program during the beginning of my junior year in college (1990). My only duty at the time was to keep my grades up and collect active duty pay. I became a commissioned officer upon receiving my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in May of 1992. After graduating college, I did a 3 year tour of duty in Pensacola, FL, with part of that time in Quantico VA (with the Marines during operation bulldog 1995 ooorah!). In 1996, I decided to be brave and take a tour of duty overseas in Yokosuka Japan, where I met my husband David Volkin a JAG corp. officer (that's military term for lawyer or judge advocate general). David soon became my life long partner and friend. We enjoy traveling together and traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, Australia, Macau, Burma, Okinawa and Laos together while stationed in Japan. We got married in Randolph, MA (He's from Canton, MA) in April of 1998 and we then got stationed...Expand for more
together in San Diego, CA. We had our first daughter Rachel Sarah in San Diego on my 30th birthday, June 25th 1999. In September of 2000, we both resigned our commission as active duty officers, but stay active in the reserves. We did a 4 week cross country zig-zag tour of America and visted many of the National Parks when we moved to Massachussetts. I couldn't talk David into moving to Ohio as he always had dreams of practicing law in Boston. He now works for an environmental/coorporate law firm in the heart of Boston. We had our second child Heather Elizabeth July 19, 2002. We built a new house in North Attleboro, MA where we now reside. I am currently a nurse working on a cardiac floor at a community hospital in North Providence, RI. I am a LCDR (Lietenant Commander) and am the asistant officer in charge (2nd in command) with our medical unit. I provide operational support to Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth VA 2 weeks a year and drill once a month at the Naval Ambulatory Clinic, Newport, RI one weekend a month. In June of 2007, I went on a 2 week humanitarian mission in Gabon, Africa where we provided medical services to indigineous populations. I proudly wear the following ribbons/medals:Navy Commendation medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit medal, National Defense ribbon, Overseas service ribbon, Global war on Terrorism ribbon and Naval Reserve Ribbon. Last but not least-I will be eligible for retirement in Feb 2nd, 2010-which will be my 20 year anniversary date of when I signed on active duty as an officer candidate.
