Evan's Story
After my sophomore year, my family moved to Warren, PA where I graduated with a class of 435 (a bit bigger than my class in Nelsonville). I adjusted to the larger school pretty well, but I don't think that I knew everyone in my class.
I went to college at Cleveland State University, majoring in Chemistry after initially working on a degree in Chemical Engineering. While there, I was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TEKE), president of the men's Glee Club, and active in many other things on campus. I was a co-op student, and worked for three companies during my co-op quarters. The draft lottery was held during my senior year there, but I was lucky enough to find a National Guard unit that had openings. I went to basic training at Fort Campbell, KY after I graduated. My advanced training was in Field Artillery at Fort Sill, OK.
I returned to Warren, PA after college, initially working for Sylvania Electric, in their R&D labs as an electroplating chemist. I lost that job in the late fall of 1970 during an economic downturn, and later worked as Chief Chemist at Jamestown Electroplating. While in Warren, I was active in the Warren Players and in the local Barbershop Chorus.
In 1973, I accepted a job as a Quality supervisor with Johnson & Johnson in a suburb of Chicago. While there, I started work on my MBA at the University of Chicago. I was transferred in the spring of 1976 to central New Jersey to be a Quality Assurance manager at a new plant they were starting in Skillman. I continued work towards my MBA at Rutgers University. In 1978, I transferred to another Johnson & Johnson company as a Senior Scientist in their technical services department. About 18 months later, I became a Senior Buyer buying the primary material used by that company (many of my projects as a scientist involved that material, so it was a natural fit). I finished my MBA in May, 1980, and was transferred to that divisions new headquarters in Arlington, TX. While working there, I started running. I also met my wife, Peggy. Less than a year after we met and started dating, I lost my job in another RIF.
I returned to the Quality field as Director of Quality, working for two different companies in the DFW area. During this period, I continued my...Expand for more
running, completing approximately 30 races a year, from 1 mile up to, and including a marathon. In November, 1987, I started working as a consultant for a small company doing productivity improvement consulting. I started traveling weekly to client sites. These included PA, OH, SC, MD, MI, TX, TN, IL, IN, MS, NC, Mexico and Canada. In 1991, I started working with a software called MIMI, doing installations for large process manufacturing companies. In 1999, my boss and I were hired as senior level consultants to work for the company that had acquired the rights to MIMI, Aspen Technology. While working for them, I did projects in LA, TX, OH, Germany, and South Korea.
In 2006, I joined Shaw Industries in the NW corner of GA. Shaw uses MIMI software to schedule their many carpet, hardwood, and laminate plants. It is also used to schedule many of the raw materials that Shaw makes for inclusion in their finished products. I recently started back singing with the Calhoun Community Chorus, and also playing golf...something I never had time to do when I was traveling every week.
In July, 2008, I took a new job back in the DFW area with Pepsico, as a Team Lead supporting their new production planning and scheduling models. My wife and I are now living in Stonebridge Ranch, McKinney, TX, which is about 35 miles north of downtown Dallas. Our home is on the public golf course in Stonebridge Ranch.
My wife and I have four beautiful grandchildren. Three girls, age 15 and twins, age 6, and one grandson, age 14. We are happy to only be an hour away from them, rather than the 12 hours distance when we were in GA. The two summers that we were in GA, we kept the twins for the entire summer.
My wife and I have traveled extensively together, to Mexico several times, to Hawaii a couple of times, to other Caribbean locations, to France (Paris), and to many other places in the US. We look forward to doing more of this when I retire in a few years.
I look forward to hearing from my "old friends and acquaintances" from all the schools that I ever attended. I have been blessed to having had the opportunity to have dinner with several of them during my travels as a consultant, and look forward to more opportunities like this in the future.
