Eve's Story

Life I am retired. I graduated with my Masters of Fine Arts (Sculpture) in 2000 and earned my second Masters in Education (Instructional Technology) in 2001. I am widowed. My late husband Dave was a wonderful guy and he died unexpectedly in May of 2016. We met in 1994 while working on our Art degrees (he was a professor at KSU at the time). We were married in 1997 and hung out together, traveled, and worked on the house. We were best friends and as cheesy as it sounds I loved spending time just sitting around with him and laughing all the time. In July of 2017 I started dating Mike and feel lucky to have found him. We became engaged July of this year (2018). Hope everyone out there is happy and healthy. School I had a huge crush on someone a year ahead of me (you know who you are!) but was way too shy to be straightforward about my feelings (darn it!). My favorite teacher has always been Mr. Johnson - he treated us like we were already adults and we so appreciated that about him. He also really helped me through a difficult time in my life and I am forever indebted to him for that. I would love to see him again and give him a HUGE HUG. Mr Kortyka was also the best because he allowed us to freely express what we felt in art class. Some students (slackers) gave him a really hard time but he was always very cool. I learned how to make backdrops, screens, and sets for our school plays - opening night was such a high. There were some very sad times when we lost classmates to accidents but also some really great times at school dances, football games, and student parties. My craziest times were sneaking out to skinny-dip in the lake with friends or to ride bikes on dark back roads. Are you surprised I survived? Me too. I still want to know who kept calling in bomb threats - especially in the winter. THANKS A LOT (sarcastic of course)! Standing outside in 2 feet of snow is not my idea of a good time - no matter how badly you wanted to get out of a test. UPDATE: I heard from a few people that Steve Hoke was the alleged culprit but he has not confirmed this claim himself. Workplace: As I worked on my M.Ed. degree I was a Graduate Assistant. I worked with faculty in developing web-based courses, integrating technology into their face-to-face courses, and training them in technologies that would help them teach. In 2001 as I was nearing graduation I found out that there was a job search on campus for the job I was doing as a G.A. The skills necessary were all skills I acquired while working on my M.Ed. as well as graphic skills which I had from my years as an art student (and I thought that time wouldn't count towards a...Expand for more
nything specific!). I applied to be the first Educational Technologist at Kent State University in the same area where I did my GA ship and beat out some very qualified people because of my skill set and personality. It was a great accomplishment for me to get a professional job that pays well with lots of great benefits. When I was working on my art degrees I had little hope of having a good job and really expected to work at a framing center or JoAnn Fabrics for the rest of my life - which is why I went back for the M.Ed. I moved from supporting Nursing and Education faculty to supporting just Education faculty and then in 2007 I took a job that supported the entire University and became part of a team of other Educational Technologists. I was promoted to Manager of Educational Technology Design in October 2010 and was manager of 4 Educational Technologists. I worked with various faculty on campus to integrate technology into their teaching, work on special projects for the department as they arose, and supervised my employees who were doing the same types of work. In 2013 I was hired to manage the faculty development center on campus and ultimately decided to take on a larger role on campus supporting Students, Faculty, and Staff with all kinds of technology as well as reaching out to new KSU students and their parents throughout the school year. Last year, after a year of trying to decide what to do with life after Dave's death, I decided to take a buy-out offer the university was offering staff and retire. In my first year of early retirement I continue to work on the house to complete remodel projects. Personal Interests: I've been uploading images to flickr (username eved if you're interested) and noticing that I've done a lot of traveling over the years - both because of my job and husband. I appreciate both and have really enjoyed all the places I've been. My favorites are Hawaii (duh), Washington D.C., Chicago, Amsterdam, Florence, Venice, France, and the Florida Keys. I would love to visit Finland someday to see where my Great-Grandparents lived. Story Idea: What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion? I look just about the same as I did in High School. I had braces from 2000 to 2001 so my teeth are straight and I had my broken nose fixed too (did you know it was broken?). I haven't been able to draw, paint, or sculpt in a while due to job, school, and home remodeling but plan to get back to it once my PhD is completed. I'm also now the opposite of shy which is an amazing switch for me - probably due to my current job experiences and ability to speak to large crowds. That's it!
