Tim's Story

After what were a very miserable 3 years of high school ( mostly family crap) I left Calgary a week after my last exam. With a bit of travel I went to Yellowknife NWT. Worked in construction for the summer, part of the work was helping to build the town of Edso, A school and the reservoir for Yellowknife. I left there to escape the cold (it was -90 with the wind chill the day I left) I flew out to Vancouver to find some place a little warmer. After a couple of weeks enjoying the city I got fed up with the place. Someone had told me there was lots of work in a place called Port Alberni so I took a bus. I have to say that as soon as I saw Vancouver Island I decided that I would live there. I met my future wife EJ shortly after arriving, we celebrated our 50th anniversary of our first date this year. Over the next 5 years I tried lots of different jobs I worked construction, a couple of sawmills, a pulp mil, a Bar , bouncer, cleaned bars, drove and also managed a cab, Drove a bus to the west coast, planted trees and even had a stint in retail. I hadn't tried logging yet so I got a job with a small operation on the west coast of the Island. While I was working there I saw Gov't Log scalers ( log scalers measure, determine quality and best use of raw logs) s0 I decided that was a job I'd enjoy so studied while in camp. he exam, passed and got a job with a scaling company. Over the next 25 years I've worked all over the coast, from the Alaska panhandle to Victoria. I've flown in float planes and helicopters to some of the most remote (and beautiful ) spots. I watched the grey whales off the coast during their migration, saw landscapes that will take your breath away watched a native carver make a canoe from a cedar log, had dinner with Russian hermit in the Broken Group, watched Grizzlies fishing and met people from all over the world. Unfortunately , my knees couldn't continue so in my 50th year I had to stop scaling, I 've been on long term disability then retired. Since then EJ and I have been involved with our local farmer's market. All of this just hits some of life since school, it's been interesting. In May 2023 my lifelong partner, Ev, died. She had a couple of small strokes which robbed her of balance and fine motor control. They also triggered dementia so the last 3 years have been tough. She is not in pain any more so that is a relief. I miss her but this too is part of a life so I'll finish the things we started then look for other options ,maybe some travel. Also Ev was an artist so I' m putting together a show of her work. I'm sharing this because we all have things we face in life and a lot of them are not a joy to deal with.
