Frances's Story

I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. When I finished high school in New Bern, I enrolled at Flora McDonald Collage in Red Springs, N. C. My first teaching position was in 1959 in Fayetteville. This is where I met my beloved husband, David James Ray. We will have been married 40 years this Dec. 21. We have one son who is a graduate of Appalachian State, Boone, NC. He just married this past July 16 to a lovely young who is co-0wner of an African Art Gallery here in Wilmington, a professional violist, and a state certificated estate apppraiser. They moved into their new home (one-family) this past Oct., right next door. I taught each grade from 2nd through community college for Brunswick County as long as the Fort ...Expand for more
Fisher AFB was opened. My regular teaching job was in 6th grade and in science. I retired June 30, 1999 from the New Hanover County School System. At that time, I was teaching at Myrtle Grove Middle School which I transferred to when the new school opened in 1988. We live a very quiet, complately satisfied life here in Carolina Beach. Both of us are very active in our church, First Baptist Church of Carolina Beach, of which both of us are ordained deacons. I do quite a bit of volunteer work--church historian, setting up a new library at our church, active deacon, serve on several committees, and the Help Center. The Help Center is a community project to help feed & clothe the homeless, unemployed, uninsured of our community.
