Garland's Story

Life I moved to Newman in 1965 my junior year. graduated in 1967 was drafted into the Army in 1968. Spent 8 weeks in basic training at Ft. Lewis, Washington from there I went to Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri for advanced training school as a combat engineer. Upon graduation from AIT i was sent to Ft. Bevoir, Virginia for training as a nuclear weapons specialist. Upon completion of this course I was sent to Germany, where I decided that the assignment was not for me. I re-enlisted for 3 years 1 of which was to be in Vietnam. I was assigned to the 11th Armored Cav. Regiment, 919th Engr. Co. 4th platoon. I earned the rank of seargent in combat on May 12th 1969 at Quon Loi and the 3rd highest award in the Army a Silver Star. I married Joy Tull, from Newman in Honolulu Haiwii in August of 1969. Upon my completion of 1 year in Vietnam I returned to the US and was assigned to Ft. Leonardwood as a Drill Seargent. Our first son was born there in 1970. I was released from the Army in Sept. 1971. We returned to Newman. We lived in Newman until 1972 when our second and last son was born. I worked at Procter & Gamble in Modesto from 1971 until 1991. ried for the third time in 2000, to Laura Lee Judd. I have worked at the Newman Plastic pipe, Procter & Gamble, Verplank, Bell & Sons Const., Dynamo (In Ft. Worth), PRC Patterson, and finally at the San Jouquin Valley National Cemetery. I am still married to Laura who is currently back in Texas on family business while I remain here taking care of my dad, who is blind, my oldest son also stays at my dad's and cares for him while I am at work. I am Currently 50% disabled, however I continue to work I lost all of my P&G retirement in the family business venture in 1991 (250,000). Shit Happens Workplace I HAVE WORKED AT VARIOUS JOBS SINCE I WAS 13 YEARS OLD. MY FIRST JOB WAS AS A CARHOP,ANTENNA INSTALLER AND GROCERY CLERK ALL WHILE IN LAMPASAS TX. FROM HERE WE MOVED TO CA. WHERE I FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL AND WORKED IN A TIRE REPAIR SHOP UNTIL I WAS DRAFTED INTO THE ARMY FROM 1968 TO 1971. I RETURNED FROM THE ARMY AND WORKED AT NEWMAN PVC PIPE CO. THENI WORKED AT P&G IN MODESTO FROM 1971 TO 1991. FROM HERE I WORKED/ OWNED A CONSTRUCTION CO. WHICH FAILED. MOVED TO TX AND WORKED AT DYNAMO POOL TABLES, MOVED BACK TO CAAND WORKED AT OIL REF. IN PATTERSON WHICH CLOSED IN 1997. WENT TO WORK AT SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY NATIONAL CEMETERY FROM 1998 TO PRESENT.
