Garry's Story
Life
I am presently retired and living in Granite Falls, NC part-time. I have 2 great sons and 4 grandchildren that was only able to happen via my beautiful wife Sharon. Yes, I did get married, found her in California in 1971 while I was im the military. She is also retired and we travel frequently visiting Matt, Johna and Heidi who are in the Air Force. Matt is ours youngest son. Brian our oldest son lives with his wife Cindy and their 3 children (Brandon, Keegan and Kaitlyn) in Veracruz, Mexico.
I joined the US Navy after Hudson High School, went thru Basic Training and Hospital Corpsman School at Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois. I was transferred to Montford Point, Camp Lejune, NC to attend basic training again this time with the Marines. My next transferr landed me at the US Naval Hospital, Annapolis, MD. I was then Trnsferred to the 9th Marines amphibious Brigade, Okinawa, Japan. Then assigned with the 3rd Marine Division. Transferred from there to the US Naval Infirmary, Twentynine Palms Marine Base. I was there for a few months then transferred ...Expand for more
to Independent Duty and assigned to the 11th Engineers Division, stationed in Big Bear Lake, CA. This is where I met my "Life Partner".
I was Honorably Discharged in 1972 and brought Sharon, (a native Californian) to live at Perkins Park, on WWilson's Creek........Whoa she did go thru culture shock..... I atttended Caldwell Community College, studying Recreational Therapy 1972 - 1974. I went to work for the North Carolina Department of Corrections in 1974 starting at the High Rise in Morganton, NC. Went back to Caldwell Community College in 1978 thru 1980 and became a Registered Nurse. After several promotions and traveling many many times to all the prisons I finally retired as an Assistant Director of Nurses western Region in 2003. I also worked as a Staff Nurse in the Emergency Room at Valdese General Hospital every other weekend from 1982 - 1997. After I retired I started my on business as a Correctional Healthcare Consultant and Expert Witness and finally decided to retire again in October 2007. Now we travel to see family, friends and just because we can.
