Gary's Story

After Morehead, I worked for a couple of years, and then in 1975, went to RCC, and got an AS. My plan then was to transfer to a four year school, and get a BS. As happens, life got in the way. My dad was diagnosed with cancer, and spent ten months in the hospital in Durham. Since my mother didn't drive, I couldn't work, go to school and be in Durham. School fell by the wayside. Fast forward a few years, I was able to get back in school and graduated from NC A&T in Greensboro with a BS in Electrical Engineering. I had been working for the City of Eden while I was in school, but left the city to take another job where I could used the EE degree. That job didn't work out, so after two years there, I accepted a n...Expand for more
ew job. In 2001, I moved to Raleigh and went to work for Raytheon (a defense contractor) doing two-way radio communications for military and public safety. I worked there until I retired a couple of years ago. During my career with Raytheon, I traveled all over the United States and many countries overseas. It was a very rewarding career! On a personal note, I got married while I was at RCC, and had a family, two girls and a boy. I was married quite a while, but unfortunately, the marriage ultimately didn't last, and I was divorced shortly after moving to Raleigh. I am now remarried, and have five grandchildren, four boys and a girl, between two of my children. My youngest daughter doesn't have any children.
